Scottish SPCA Inspector Kerry Kirkpatrick contacted the farmer after being alerted to the cow's plight.
He said: "When the job came through my first thought was, this is a wind up, but I arrived at the field to find the
cow
looking confused but surprisingly calm despite having
his
head wedged tightly in between the rungs of the ladder.
Methinks that SPCA inspector needs a biology lesson.

Always were when I was at school. Apparently this is not necessarily the case now. No wonder I'm confused.

An adult female that has had a calf (or two, depending on regional usage) is a cow. A young female before she has had a calf of her own and is under three years of age is called a heifer A young female that has had only one calf is occasionally called a first-calf heifer.
A cow with a ladder is called a coniving bovine and guilty of trying to get up to the hayloft.

I think this is where the term "Bull-Crap" and it's more naughty version came from.

There is no male cows or male heifers. They are called bulls or steers.
So if you ever have to milk a cow, they will be the ones without horns.
Someone else can explain what a steer is.. I get tears in my eyes when I talk about that.

Chickens:
Just Born: hatchlings
Young Males/Females: chicks
Females: hens
Males: roosters, cocks
Cattle:
Newborn: calf
Orphaned calf: dogie (wouldn't have known this myself but for an old C/W song)
Young Female: heifer (as
Steve M
stated but older heifers are often called cows; like many human females, they rarely tell age)
Young Male: bullock
Adult Female: cow
Uncastrated Adult Male: bull
Castrated Adult Males: steer (individually or plural)

This is not necessarily so: cows, bulls and steer have often been dehorned. The reason a bull will be more than cantankerous with you for trying to milk him is his aversion to becoming a steer.

All very interesting. Just to confuse the issue there is no singular form of the collective term "cattle" & cow is generally used for one example whether it be male or female.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cattle#Singular_terminology_issue
Going back to the original news item the "Silly Cow" in the subject line was actually a Belgian Blue bullock (castrated male).

I'm from the south if that counts.
On an off note, here's something I've heard while living near the middle:
If you ever hear a redneck yell "Hey ya'll, watch this!!!" it's a good idea to step back, because it's usually the last thing they ever say.

I normally wait till the camera is pointing my way before making the "WATCH THIS!!!!" statement. I like to have my accidents recorded for the doctors to enjoy whilst I'm sitting in A&E

What's that?
Just so you know, I once looked up redneck in the dictionary, and part of it read, "often used disparingly". In other words, I thik you might want to edit that out.

Terminology also differs by location. Australia has its own and I doubt much of Britain has a natural occurance of bovine dogies and mavericks. Neither was dogie nor maverick ever a common term in New England, .

I accidentally branded myself with a soldering iron once, I don't recommend it! Smells like over cooked bacon and stings like mad
There are two types of aeroplane, Spitfires and everything else that wishes it was a Spitfire!

An adult female that has had a calf (or two, depending on regional usage) is a cow. A young female before she has had a calf of her own and is under three years of age is called a heifer A young female that has had only one calf is occasionally called a first-calf heifer.
A cow with a ladder is called a coniving bovine and guilty of trying to get up to the hayloft.
then what's a male cow and male heifer?
There is no male cows or male heifers. They are called bulls or steers.
So if you ever have to milk a cow, they will be the ones without horns.
Someone else can explain what a steer is.. I get tears in my eyes when I talk about that.
Cause if you try to milk a bull, he'll look at you with love in his eyes....
Wouldn't advice doing that though. While taking a visit to my relatives in the countryside, I attempted milking cows. There was this silly chicken that kept on eating the cows dairy. I went in front to chase it away and the cow wasn't happy about that it (lightly) head butted me but I got mud all over my designer gumboots.
Most people think that flying a plane is dangerous, except pilots because they know how easy it is.
Arguing with a pilot is like wrestling with a pig in the mud, after a while you begin to think the pig likes it.
