Thanks You two!  I'm not sure why they change them names like that.  Chicken-rooster-chicken(don't start H)  Bull-Cow-Steer-Hiefer,  Boy-Man-Girl_Woman-Baby.  All too confusing.
Sorry, I've just got to... after all, except for the first few years, my early life was on a small farm and I helped my dad on occasion when he worked weekends for the veterinarian.

Chickens:
Just Born: hatchlings
Young Males/Females: chicks
Females: hens
Males: roosters, cocks

Cattle:
Newborn: calf
Orphaned calf: dogie (wouldn't have known this myself but for an old C/W song)
Young Female: heifer (as Steve M stated but older heifers are often called cows; like many human females, they rarely tell age)
Young Male: bullock
Adult Female: cow
Uncastrated Adult Male: bull
Castrated Adult Males: steer (individually or plural)

Steve M wrote on Aug 17th, 2011 at 4:29pm:
So if you ever have to milk a cow, they will be the ones without horns.
This is not necessarily so: cows, bulls and steer have often been dehorned. The reason a bull will be more than cantankerous with you for trying to milk him is his aversion to becoming a steer.

Cool

An adult female that has had a calf (or two, depending on regional usage) is a cow. A young female before she has had a calf of her own and is under three years of age is called a heifer  A young female that has had only one calf is occasionally called a first-calf heifer.  Smiley
A cow with a ladder is called a coniving bovine and guilty of trying to get up to the hayloft.

then what's a male cow and male heifer? Huh

There is no male cows or male heifers. They are called bulls or steers.  Wink So if you ever have to milk a cow, they will be the ones without horns.  Cheesy Someone else can explain what a steer is.. I get tears in my eyes when I talk about that. Wink

Cause if you try to milk a bull, he'll look at you with love in his eyes.... Smiley

And horns in your gut. Cool

All very interesting. Just to confuse the issue there is no singular form of the collective term "cattle" & cow is generally used for one example whether it be male or female. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cattle#Singular_terminology_issue

Going back to the original news item the "Silly Cow" in the subject line was actually a Belgian Blue bullock (castrated male).

I'm from the south if that counts.

On an off note, here's something I've heard while living near the middle:
If you ever hear a redneck yell "Hey ya'll, watch this!!!"  it's a good idea to step back, because it's usually the last thing they ever say. Cheesy

I normally wait till the camera is pointing my way before making the "WATCH THIS!!!!" statement. I like to have my accidents recorded for the doctors to enjoy whilst I'm sitting in A&E Grin Grin Grin

A&E?
What's that? Huh

Just so you know, I once looked up redneck in the dictionary, and part of it read, "often used disparingly".  In other words, I thik you might want to edit that out. Lips Sealed

A&E - Accident and Emergency, I believe the modern American version is Emergency Room.

You've 'herd' of a Maverick then?  Wink

An unbranded bovine of either sex is called a "maverick" in the USA and Canada.

It's not so unbelievable that Ozzy's antics would be considered Art and Entertainment in the U.S.

Terminology also differs by location. Australia has its own and I doubt much of Britain has a natural occurance of bovine dogies and mavericks. Neither was dogie nor maverick ever a common term in New England, .

I Wiki searched 'cow' and got nearly the same results. I was surprised that no other species were mentioned.
Such as (cow and bull), Moose, Elephants, buffalo?, ect. Huh
