Is there any way to have smoke visible ALL THE TIME-
without pressing "I"?

You should be able to turn your smoke on, then save it as your default flight.  After that, any time you start, the smoke should be on, and if you change aircraft, if they have smoke, it should be on, also... I think!  Smiley

Yes, that makes sense, but only on the default flight.

seems to me there should be some way to convert the .cfg file for the smoke to be an 'effect'?
Doesn't it?

Hmm, even the "save flight" idea didn't work. Tongue

The "smoke" is already an effect, and can certainly be added to any aircraft.cfg.  I'm surprised that saving a default (using the Extra 300) with the smoke on didn't spawn with the smoke on, or smoke on with anything else with smoke on after selecting a different aircraft.

What type of smoke are you wanting to display?...under what conditions?

Something like engine smoke?

There are a few different ways.  Though I checked these on props, it should work on jets as well.

Here is a gauge that will emit smoke depending on your throttle position. Download brent_bvrsmk.zip from Avsim. It contains the gauge, a smoke effect and instructions.

It uses the gauge which triggers a light effect. This will emit smoke when the throttle is at 80% or more. You'll have to make one entry in the [Lights] section for each engine. You'll have to edit the x, y, z positions for each. You can use the x, y, z positions from the Engine.x entries in the [GeneralEngine] section as starting points. You can use any appropriate engine smoke effect. The f6 you mentioned in your other post is a little darker than the one include in this package.  For anything darker than that you'll have to search around. Jet engine smoke add-on effects are generally darker.
************************
A second method is similar to the above. Just make the [Lights] section entries, forget about the gauge. The smoke will be on whenever your lights (L) are on. If you want to tie it to a particular light switch, like the beacon, just change the # after the = to one of these: 1=beacon, 2=strobe, 3=navigation, 4=cockpit, 5=landing, 6=Taxi.
************************
A third method use 'Contrails'. The smoke will be on whenever the engine(s) are on.

In the aircraft.cfg file, under the appropriate sections add these lines.

[GeneralEngineData]

max_contrail_temperature=-5    //<----add this line. Choose any temp C below which you want contrails to occur

[EFFECTS]

contrail=fx_smoke_f6                       //<--add this line using any engine smoke effect

Advantage is it automatically attaches to the engines. Disadvantage, because there's no real prop wash in the sim it looks like crap when sitting on the ground.  Roll Eyes
