I noticed this happening ever since one time a couple of days ago when I tried to load a plane in FS2004 and my computer disagreed with that idea and told me that it ran out of virtual memory...
So now when I load any plane, even default planes, there are sounds that I USED to be able to hear that I no longer hear now. Just complete silence.
Like for some planes I can only hear interior engine noises and no exterior sounds anymore.
In the sound settings ALL sliders are on and moved to 100%
I checked each sound folder that contains the waves and they are still all there, however when I played them in windows media player I noticed each sound was silent.
But I then played each sound in iTunes and I could hear them...

This is very weird and I really want to know what happened and to get this fixed because I am a freeware soundset developer and I obviously need to hear what I am doing!!

Computer Specs:
Processor: Intel Core 2 Q8300 2.5GHz
RAM: 6GB DDR3
HDD: 1TB
OS: Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
Direct-X 11

Check the "Flight Simulator 2004 FAQ's" at the top of this page. Number 13 addresses a problem with audio CODECs. It may be the same problem you have.

Good luck, and let us know when you get it fixed.

So it looks like for some reason my PCM Audio Codec went missing I guess and I probably need to get it back?

Try making a backup copy of your fs9.cfg or simply rename it then restart fs9 and try it to see if you still have sound missing.

Increase virtual memory setting, check how to for your OS.
It's under the performance tab.

On win7: right click 'mycomputer' and click on properties then select advanced system settings, performance can be found on next screen.

It's very similar on Xp.

Steve

I made a backup copy of FS9.cfg and started FS9. Still no sounds.
My virtual memory is as high as it can go.

To reinstall the PCM audio codecs it suffices you install one of the many codec packs you can find on the net that give the PC Xvid, DivX and so many other audio and video capability. Wink

Try cycling the Q key. Sometimes to me too happen that sounds get stuck and trying to press some times that key they get unstuck. Undecided

No I am sure pressing the "Q" key won't fix it. The sounds won't play in Windows Media Player either like I have mentioned, but they do play fine in Audacity and iTunes. But I am thinking the sounds not playing in Media Player issue is related to the sounds not playing in FS2004 issue.

And I really do not want to do a system restore...

Oh and I neglected to mention but I hear every sound I need to hear in FSX, it's just in FS2004 that I can't hear certain sounds! So FSX is working fine.

For last attempt, try and install this: http://www.free-codecs.com/download/ace_mega_codecs_pack.htm codec pack.

It's written it installs the last version of the PCM for sure, so it should work, afterwards.

Should it STILL not work in the end... draconian measures may be needed. Undecided

I dont know if it will help or not, but in your deeply burried FS9.CFG put the following 2 lines at the bottom:

[OldModules]
FSSound.dll=1

If there already is an [OldModules] section in your FS9.CFG file, then only add the FSSound.dll=1 line.

Start up FS and see if the sounds come back.
