My unit decided we had worked way too hard the past month so we got clearance from the Colonel to go take the uniform off and learn some history. We headed to Alcatraz, one of the most famous prisons in America. Anybody who has seen the movie "The Rock" will see the cliche here...Marines taking over Alcatraz...
It was a terrific experience. You really have to just stop and absorb it all when you are standing there either in the prison or outside it on the island.
Approaching Alcatraz Island, AKA The Rock
The Dock
For a period of time a population of Native Americans lived on and controlled Alcatraz Island, hence the painting behind the sign.
This was where the prisoners worked if they were lucky enough to get a job while incarcerated
These were various buildings where officers worked or lived when they weren't patrolling the main prison house
