Is there a way to have one of the windows detailed in the panel.cfg file display along with the Virtual Cockpit by default (so it doesn't have to be opened after the aircraft is selected)? For example if you have [Window02] defined as the GPS, have the GPS open and display without having to press "Shift+3".

yes there is.

you can either create your own [window#] entry, or simply use the ones that are given to you already.

go to the aircraft folder that you want the window to show up for, open the PANEL folder, then the PANEL.CFG.

Here, I will use the GPS_PANEL from the C172 for the example::

[Window02]
size_mm=456,378
window_size=0.5
position=8
BACKGROUND_COLOR=0,0,0
VISIBLE=0         <~~ Change this to VISIBLE=1
ident=GPS_PANEL
zorder=4

gauge00=fs9gps!gps_500,            0,0

by changing it to =1, it will ALWAYS be visible

You can do this with the radio stack, throttle quadrant, GPS, Helicopter Hover gauge, ..... and gauge that you have in your Gauge folder.

Hope this helps

Have you tried this in FSX? It doesn't work for me.

yes i have and it DOES work.    Verify that your [Window#]'s are in SEQUENTIAL ORDER.... 0 1 2 3 4 5.... in the default C172 the order was 0 3 1 2 4 5   this may be a reason why the windows are not / will not show up correctly if you make this START-UP-VISIBLE.

at the top of the PANEL.CFG you will notice something along the lines of

[Window Titles]
Window00=Main Panel
Window01=Radio Stack
Window02=GPS
Window03=IFR Panel
Window04=Landing View
Window05=Mini Panel

These numbers MUST match the [Window##] in sequential order as they are listed or things will get messed up and not show properly.

I'm afraid this suggestion does not work in FSX Acceleration with SP2 on Windows 7x64. Setting that to =0 or =1 does nothing either way. What WILL happen, however is if the panel.cfg gauge segment has:

render_3d_window=0

and you  change THAT to =1, you can NOT get the window to open at all.

I'm still looking for a way to display a window full time, regardless of whether I am in virtual cockpit view or external view. The only way I have found to display a window is to manually use the hotkeys every time I want to view it.

I have the windows in sequential order (I learned that is necessary early on when first learning to edit panel files) but it still won't work for me. Here is a window I am trying to display full time on this particular helicopter. It works fine with SHIFT+6:

[Window05]
Background_color=0,0,0
size_mm=65,20
window_size_ratio=1.000
visible=1
ident=80
window_size= 0.250, 0.200
window_pos= 0.375, 0.800

gauge00=NH90_NL!Altimeter,  31,1,13,14
gauge02=ah64radalt!ah64radalt,  13,0,18,18
gauge03=p38f_lightning!Climb-Indicator,  45,1,15,13

EMAIL ME the PANEL FOLDER that you are having problems with, and I will make your GPS stay open.   As you change views though you will have to press SHIFT + # to get it to reopen, unless you have 2 or more monitors and you can move it to another screen.  If you dont move it, it will close on you.

Thanks for the reply, but this issue has been resolved. I now have panel windows that open automatically when I load the plane, and STAY open through changing between internal and external views (no need for the annoying pressing of Shift+#, which was one thing I wanted to eliminate).

Along the way I also learned that the "visible=" command was only implemented on 2D panels, which I never use. It does not work with Virtual Cockpit overlay (popup) windows.

Here is the thread that tells how I achieved my goal, thanks to some helpful members! Smiley I hope it is not a problem linking to another forum.
