I can't believe the sheer effort he took to get into uniform underage, what a character. Rest In Peace.

RIP.

Of those who saw action in the Great War, there remains just 109 year old Claude Choules left now, a RN veteran (who joined as a 14 year old boy sailor) now residing in Australia. Sadly, according to reports before Christmas, he is now in very poor health.

I get the impression from some of the quotes that he was quite a character with a very dry sense of humour. They sure don't make 'em like that anymore Sad

That is what I miss from my Uncle, those fascinating stories of WWII and especially all the mischief that wen't on and on and on.

It's almost the end of serving WWI veterans then, Then it's up to us all to keep the stories alive as best as we can  Smiley

Makes me wish I'd pried more war stories out of my grandfather, who marched all over France with the US Army in 1918, when he wasn't much older than Mr. Buckles, came home in one piece, and died when I was 18.  He didn't say much about the war, especially the unpleasant things.
But the little I know I will gladly tell anyone who'll listen...  Grin

I can't imagine how he must of felt being the last one out of the 4,734,991 Americans that served in World War I. It's interesting how the figure ends in one; that one ended up being Frank Buckles.

Considering how many never came home, I'll bet it felt pretty good, sometimes.  Grin I know my Grampa was pretty happy about being one of the older WWI vets.

He's one of the few that got to see the end of the war.

WW1 officially ends this Sunday!

A bad day at golf is better than a good day at work.
