Actually I flew on this aircraft a bit back in the 60s...the T-29 version, Navigator Trainer. The funny thing is she had only two hatches...one directly in front of a prop, and one directly in front of the horizontal stab. Guess how you had to baleout, if the occasion arose.
There was a nylon harness attahced to the rear hatchway (really just a long cargo strap) that you threw out when you popped that hatch. Then you grabbed it and held on as long as you could while you slid down it, avoiding the horizontal stab until the slipstream pulled you off or you 'got to the end of your rope'.
Since the aircraft had a crew of three and up to 14 nav students onboard at a time, can you see them all trying to use that strap in an emergency? Strange but true.
