Probably going over old ground with this one,but need little advice please.
I aint been on FS very long really, and i fly my aircraft quite well, but i still can't master the lining up of the runway still.
And if its not a clear day, then i am totally knackered, and can't find runway at all.
There must be something stupid i am doing wrong,i think.
I also find hard to understand the ILS system, have tried going backj into the flying school, but just doesn't help me.
Any tips or help/advice anyone can give me,would really finish everything off great for me that would.

Cheers everyone

Are you using the default Cessna 172 Trainer for your practice in the Flight Simulator?
You will be spending many, many hours in it before going on to anything else more complicated, including Radio Navigation...that's for much later!... Wink...!

Practice, practice, and even more practice, take-offs and landings!... Wink...!

find a runway with ILS and it's airport with vor with dme  if you can.

Setup your radios.

Line up your aircraft on the runway for take off, taxi slightly down centre to check you are in the middle and going runway direction. Check runway height at threshold.

Read how to use the Slew function started by pressing the Y key.

You can control up and down with the Q and A keys and joystick for backwards/forwards and side to side movement but I would stick with the keyboard as this won't introduce any unwanted side ways movement.

Before you press the Y button, throttle up to get to airspeed of 70 knts with your flaps set.

Press the Y key then the Q key which will make you go up.
Once at 1000' above runway height 'A' key will make your ascent slow and if you keep using it, it will go down so > ( check this one) press the numeric 5 key, this will stop you ascending, this depends on whether you have num on or not.

carefull which key you press as some will induce pitch and roll and yaw.
Go backwards and watch the horizontal line of the ILS instrument, approx 3 miles backwards from the runway it will be above the central point.

Go backwards slightly more so that you are definately below the glideslope, this is very important in the future when you get onto the 'heavies' as you will not be able to loose speed and 'chase' the glideslope so be below it.

Press the Y button again and it should let you fly, as long as you have not moved sideways, all you have to do is control attitude ie don;t throw the joystick  Grin no seriously, check your pitch up and you should control your decent with the throttle, maintain height for the moment but watch the glideslope, you should catch it as it approaches the centre, if you get your elevator trim right you should only need to adjust power right down to the runway following the glideslope.

Once you can follow the glideslope, introduce some sideways offset but still pointing runway direction  so you have to turn onto the localiser part of the ILS.

Afterwards, do same again but not pointing runway direction.

It will come to you, just practice and practice, then when you think you can do it, do it again.

If you can get your hands on fs2002, I seem to remember there was an approach setup at chicago meigs where you only needed to adjust throttle to land it.

good luck

Steve

May the Mynd be with you.
So far my number of landings either passenger or pilot equal my number of takeoffs, but that is due to change Smiley

Uh, ditto what EVVFCX said.  It took me almost a year before I could consistently land aircraft.  One thing, check the reference speeds so you know about how slow you can go with flaps down.  You would be surprised.  Landing at a reasonable speed gives you time to work on coming in lined up with the runway.  Takes a lot of practice...., a lot of practice.  Eventually you will find yourself landing all kinds of aircraft without much difficulty.  Each aircraft is different though.  Good Flying Smiley

Jase35, only wish I could still help!

Years back I did an ILS tutorial with screenshots that helped quite a bit. It's still in FAQs, and has received over 50,000 views; but on calling it up I found that the screenshots have disappeared!:-

http://205.252.250.26/cgi-bin/yabb2/YaBB.pl?board=COF;action=display;num=1111322...

I still have the screenshots filed and would be happy to put them back on - but I don't know if I can 'modify' the post after all this time, nor do I recall how I originally uploaded them.

Could one of the moderators please provide some advice about how best to restore the tutorial in its original form, by putting the screenshots back on? I'd be happy to do the job - it's helped a lot of people in its time - but I simply don't jhave the computer knowledge to put things to rights.

Is Jase35 having problems with just; "landing", using the (Autopilot) Radio ILS system...

...or having problems with "landing" correctly, in general, in any aircraft?

The reason for my Post regarding using a; "Trainer" Aircraft*.

"Radio Navigation" follows after basic flight training.

NAV,

Looking into it.  No promises for "easy" though.   Smiley

Older photos got cleaned out a while back;  the storage gets enormous due to all the images posted on the various forums.....so periodic cleaning is unfortunately necessary every few years.

You can fix this yourself Nav. Find out the image file names by clicking the Quote button on the relevant post in your topic. Uploading the original images under the same file names should fix it.

With a bit of luck you backed up the images using the same file names. This would make it easy.

Hold on for just a bit, Nav.  We are seeing if there is any way to more easily find those images on a (absurdly huge) backup file in storage, and then upload them back into the database from our end.  No promises at all.... but Pete is looking into it.

If not easily possible, Hagar is correct about how to do it.

(I'm confronted with the same stuff from all of my early home cockpit stuff from 06 and before.)

best,

Thanks, JBaymore, Hagar, Pete - all fixed, they're back in!

Jase35, use the link posted above and see if it helps. By the way, you don't have to use the Boeing 737, the procedures will work with any FS aeroplane equipped with autopilot/ILS, including the Cessnas. Just look whichever aeroplane you're using up in the Learning Centre to check approach speed, flap settings etc.

Fozzer, turbofire, of course you're both right in principle. But any of us who were lucky enough to fly the real thing a bit will recall that we were able to watch several 'propah' landings carried out by the instructor before we tried it ourselves; so we at least knew what a decent landing looked like. I think the screenshots in the tute probably help at first because they show new simmers that.

But, Jase35, their points are well made. By all means use the ILS at first - but then move on to 'Stage Two' - set up and save a practice approach and fly it frequently. Work up as soon as you can to cutting out the ILS (and autothrottle if the aeroplane has one) earlier and earlier until you can fly the whole approach manually, without using the automatic aids.

PS For good measure, I've also reinstated the screenshots on my other tute, which shows two ways of making a full manual landing in a crosswind.
