In the 1990's I remember watching planes in Buffalo do no pushback turns at the gate, where instead of pushing back the plane the would just start up the engines, pull back the jet bridge, and do a quick sharp turn. Does anyone else remember this or why they don't do this anymore?

Rarely do aircraft do powered pushbacks anymore. A lot of factors have gone into that, including efficiency and safety, not to mention not all aircraft are even permitted to do so.

They probably don't do that much because you stand a chance of puttting a wingtip into the retracted jetbridge, or the terminal.

You are missing Jordan's point, it was not a powered pushback, but a start and then full nose steering and turning away from the gate.

It is more down to the respiratory factor than anything. At the airport that I work at, 737's, CRJ, Dash always until recently would just power on and turn away. The wing clearance is/was more than adequate. The problem is, power on, turn away and then fill any open window or door with the gentle aroma of freshly burn Jet A1. It is now being realised just how poisonous the exhaust is. So a push back stops the buildings being bathed in the stuff.
