haven't played with fs9 in years....water was always one of the main weak points....has there been any breakthroughs in the past couple of years?....was thinking of installing it again...so many interesting aircraft, where fsx suffers in this area, and seems to be getting worse....even the fs9 ones that have been converted to fsx...many aren't totally compatible

intel i7 950.....asus p6t delux v2....asus gtx 285......raptor 150g...raptor300g (fsx)......liquid cooled cpu cooler.....6gb corsair 1600-777........windows 7......antec 900 case.....

there have been many many many updates for the water.

one of biggest, is REX2004.  not only can you change the textures of the water, but you can change the color, hue, and waves.  You also get HIGH Def Clouds, new runway textures/taxiway textures, trees..... everything is upgraded!!   Well worth spending the money for it.

here is just some of what REX2004 will do for you.... clouds and water:

Welcome back to FS9
Take a look at Howard's Mix found here

http://www.simviation.com/simviation/?ID=85&page=20&mark=5457

I was really pleased with the overall package but didn't particularly like the clouds, so you might check these out

I am a firm believer  in freeware

thanks i appreciate that....even with the payware, i still notice those vertical columns of shadows across the water which i've often seen.....i guess that's a sticky for fs9, and can't be adjusted.....sometimes there were lines like a graph or whatever, from what i remember...

yeah. the land and water is broken up into "grids"  that way the designers could make 1 texture the equivilent of 1 mile x 1 mile, then just copy it 400,000 times and hope you never notice.

its just like some of the younger kids cartoons... Scooby Doo.  When shaggy and scooby are running inside a building, the creators use the same background 5-8 times before they get to the exit of a building.   hmmmmmmmm. didnt i already see that statue 5 times?

How much does that "real environment" Rex product run? They don't say on their site and I didn't want to go through the process of purchasing it just to find out how much it was.

REX for FS2004...AUD$33.50

I ordered it a few weeks back. Combined with other goodies such as Active Sky and Ground Environment Pro, you can conjure up a pretty gloomy day, or whatever else floats your boat...as mentioned, there are many types of water renditions to choose from as well. You can even modify your own themes to adjust contrast/hue/plankton, etc. +1 recommendation

Prior to purchasing REX for FS 2004, this was always my favourite water effect for FS 2000, 2002, and 2004:

If you have purchased REX for FS 2004, then you wont need Flight Water Pro.....

But if you cant afford to purchase REX, then Flight Water Pro will do, for its Water effects.....give it a try...Wink...!
Don't forget to save the original files first!

Paul.

The nice thing about Flight Water Pro is that you don't get those annoying vertical streaks on it, like you do with some other Water Effects!

one other download that I forgot to mention that may give you another "all around box of goodies" (Clouds, Multiple Weather Contidions, Sky colors, water, scenery - trees and static birds) is ..

Howard's Mix, The FSX Experience (for fs9) -- FREE from here, 4TH up from bottom :: http://www.simviation.com/simviation/?ID=85&page=20&mark=5457

If you audition Howards Mix, be SURE to back up folders first. It will replace numerous items without much (if any) warning.

When I looked at it, I installed it to a temporary folder first so I could see exactly what folders it was going to make changes to and then backed them all up.

Sure am glad I did as I did not care for many of the changes and was able to go back to what I had previously very easily.

So use great caution.

Another good water addon/replacement is the package called Waterzone, by lemoncat, if you can still find it (freeware).  Its old, but I still consider it the best water package since the early days of FS2004.  Sometimes I use this in place of REX water, or in conjunction with REX waves... its that good.

Cheers,
RB
