Is there a step-by-step tutorial on how to attach effects to a 3D model in gmax?

Do you mean like smoke?  That's done in the .cfg.  You can also add an XML to a plane for effects like on the FSX F-18.   Wink

Well, I can't seem to download any files from SimV anymore ( Huh) so I can't see what you linked to.  So I don't know what it contains, but I'm pretty sure I remember it being a smoke plume that you place using XML.

That's an option.  However, to actually attach an effect to an object in Gmax, you will need the AttachPoint Tool.  It's a plugin that sits in your Utilities tab.  (This one works for FS9, but I'm not sure about FSX.)  It comes with one of the following SDKs (I can't remember which Tongue): MakeMDL, BGLComp, Gmax or Special Effects.  I know that's a lot of downloads, but you honestly need all of those if you're gonna be doing scenery in the first place.

Anyway, after you have the attachpoint tool, take a look at how it's supposed to work and come back with more questions!  Yay! Cheesy

If for FSX, there's a tool in the menubar under FSTools called AttachPointTool that allows you to attach any effect in the Effects folder to a selected object. If you wanted to have smoke come out of a chimney, you would create a small box sitting at the top of the chimney, then you would use the attach tool to attach the chimney smoke effect to it.

I've used the effects SDK forest fire example and placed a few effects in the scenery by substituting the "fire" part with other effects.  The only thing that I had to alter was the altitude, which I think is in meters, above ground level, and, as per the location, the lat and long.  It's not part of the model, but it works.
