Suddenly, I no longer have text showing on my FSX toolbar or the ATC window.  The bar shows and I can click on the dropdown menus but no text shows anywhere.  The ATC window pops up but no text shows.  I am shooting in the dark.

Any ideas what I have done or need to do?

Thanks in advance.

One thing--  What graphics card do you have, and how much memory does it have?

Asus G71GX-RX05 from BestBuy.     2.53GHz Intel Core 2 Duo P8700 (Very easily overclocked by 15%, 25% for xtreme live-or-die sessions),
6GB of 800MHz DDR2 RAM       1GB GDDR3 Nvidia GeForce GTX 260M     500GB 5400 RPM SATA-150 HDD, w/ 2nd drive bay.  All for only $1300!

THIS IS AWESOME!!!

This happens alot for some strange reason, and most likely your fsx.CFG might have got corrupt. Go to where your fsxCFG is located, this address is for WinXP:
(C:\Documents and Settings\Your name\Application Data\Microsoft\FSX) , vista and Win7 address might be a bit different.
Save the file to a different folder.
Fire up the sim and it will write a new one.
If that does the trick than you can go and delete the old one. Hope this helps you.

I have a big Dell with multi-media features and an abundance of memory.  FSX works great.  Except for this sudden nuisance.  Followed advice on taking out the FSX,cfg file.  Launched sim, planes work great.  Still can't get text on toolbar or ATC window.

Fun times.

Again, what is your graphics card, and how much onboard memory does it have?

This problem can happen if your graphics card's mipmap detail is set very low.

Did you copy the fsx.cfg? 'Cause you have to delete it from the FSX folder (that's why you should do a backup). Only then FSX will write a new cfg...

Not quite sure how to work in the forum, so I will just answer here.  I have an nVidia GeForce 6800 card with 256MB memory.  Up until the aforementioned abrupt turn of event, the card was handling the sim very well.

If there is a setting that might be the culprit, I am willing to climb under the hood and do whatever seems appropriate.

Thanks for your help.

I saved a copy to my desktop and then deleted the fsx.cfg file.  Launched sim...no change.  Could it be the version I have?  I have 10.0.6137.  I'm just wondering if there is an inherent shortcoming in the version that only manifests itself under very specific conditions.

I had the same longer ago.

It has happened when my graphic card crashed.

I am not totally free of crashes now, but this kind of effect is gone.

I have uninstalled and reinstalled FSX and still have the problem.  I'm beginning to wonder if my graphics card is the culprit.  Any way you or anyone know to check out the card and see if it is getting ready to conk out?  5/21 update: I downloaded the latest driver for my graphics card.  Still no change.

Could the mipmap detail have been inadvertently or spontaneously reset?  If so, how does an "igernant hillbilly" make changes?

Jim, with my graphics card being from ATI, I have a configuration utility that gives me the option of setting the Mipmap detail level. Mipmaps control how objects appear at a distance and I know for a fact that they influence the appearance of text in the menus. With the Mipmap detail too low, my menus appear as a faint gray smudge with no distinct letters visible.

I see that you have an Nvidia card (with which I have no experience). Perhaps someone here in this group can chime in on this topic.

I don't think there is an option for NVIDIA cards.  I have wanted to turn them lower (or even off) but there is no option in the NVIDIA control panel.  ???

I had this today again, but additionally to the missing texts my 'graphics' turned crazy.

At first I thought it is FSX related, but after closing FSX also Windows was turning crazy.

I had to restart.

In earlier time I had it more often.

My frame rate is set to 'unlimited'. It brings an increase in fps, but also increases the risk of this kind of crashes.

But my hope is to find out how to avoid it in the future.  Wink
