There is another posibility ............. it maybe a power problem.

What is your power supply rated at?

ATI cards generally suck more power out of a system than they say on the spec sheet.

875 watt. The ATI 5970 HD minimum requirement is 650 watt for a single card, 850 watt with dual cards via Crossfire. I think the 875 watt is enough for my single card.

Possibly not ........ as a lot is dependant on the supply from the PSU to the card. I've burned out a PSU and a card in the last few years. The PSU was at least 50 watts above the minimum for the card but the power was distributed to the card badly. The card that burned out was because of a similar problem it just gave a different out come. My PSU now is well over spec for the power requirements of  my card and should be good enough for at least one upgrade.

I think you are missing some things.
This is a brand new high end machine. Everything I do works great except FSX/FS9. But that has improved as well. I think I added to the problems by installing too many aircraft/scenery packages too quickly. I ran registry booster last night and found in excess of 300 errors. They have been fixed and FSX is now running at a smooth 30 fps without all the anomalies etc. I have had two lock ups, but only in the second or third flight in a row with the previous being an extended flight. I am still testing and I'm sure there are other tweaks that will help. I do not believe it is a power issue, especially since no other programs have shown any effect.. I have had FSX, Google Earth, Google Chrome, Fraps, and REX open at the same time without any indication of strain on the processor or the video card. I have run 3D Mark with no problems and a good score. Not the highest, but good. There is nothing to indicate a power or temperature issue. I have yet to see the temp exceed 31 C. On my old machine, I could not even run iTunes while FS was running. Now I run FSX, iTunes, Fraps (for screenshots), etc. all at the same time, with ease. And I sometimes forget that I had other programs open, like PSP, and again with no indication of strain on the processor or card. The only time I have heard it kick into turbo boost, was the most intensive part of 3D Mark and once when I was flying and listening to music and did not notice the time and AVG kicked in with a fast scan. Even that did not effect the sim.

Oh, wait, you're talking about the computer.  Grin
Right now, win 7 default, every Wednesday, but I think I'm going to change to daily. But every time I check it, there is 0% fragmentation on all drives. Thinking about getting O&O, but not sure the budget will allow it.
