Heard the news this morning on the radio when it just happened. By then they didn't know there were that much Dutch aboard. Heard that later in the afternoon. 61 of the 103 dead are Dutch and a 9 year old Dutch boy survived. It shocked me for a moment. Especially for that boy. How horrible must it be, to loose your family (father, mother, brothers or sisters maybe) in the blink of an eye. Unimaginable.

RIP to the victims of this accident and condolences to their families and friends.

That's true Sean. But to loose your family at that age in a traumatic event (whether it be a plane crash or something else). I don't know. The boy will probably been taken care of by relatives and friends but still.

RIP for the passengers on board, truly saddening when a disaster like this happens.
Very lucky for that one boy though, must give him a new look on life.

Completely aside all of that, does anyone know why the aircraft has only one winglet on the right wing?

The airplane might only have had one winglet for maintenance reasons. Maybe it was taken off, and the airplane was put back into service before it could be replaced. Maybe they did not have a replacement for it. Who know's really? It could have been for any reason. What I do know is that airplanes don't need winglets to fly, but using them is more beneficial than not using them. My condolences to the friends and families involved in this unfortunate event.

From the CDL (component deviation list)
Winglets, 2 fitted, one may be missing provided hole is covered. The following performance penalties are applicable:

Take off and approach climb performance limiting weights are reduced by 17 150kgs

One engine inoperative net ceiling reduced by 884ft

Fuel consumption increased by 1.20%

While I can honestly say I don't understand the reference at all. I do know that Webb either said this because in his mind, it is true, or he said it to get a rise out of people. The latter is probably the more accurate reason. If everyone ignores him, he loses. If people get angry at him and respond, he wins. I vote on ignoring this possible attention seeker.

The boy from Holland seems to be improving. How life can change at the blink of an eye, I wish him the best life can offer and I hope the press leaves him alone long enough to let him grow up.
