Barely past square one, headed for two, in the wonderful world of repainting. The default FSX Beaver is my current victim and here's the question. On the vertical tail, ahead of the rudder, is a rectangular area which, when painted over, still stands out. Is this removable and, if not, what's its purpose?

Try looking at the alpha channel. If it is there and something you want removed, just cover it in the same shade as the rest of the alpha. The first time I ran into this, it almost drove me crazy. Crazier?
A lot of times, the creator will make the aircraft ID or other text, etc. non reflective, to show up better. Hence the difference in the alpha. I usually don't bother and just let everything shine away.
If God intended aircraft engines to have horizontally opposed engines, Pratt and Whitney would have made them that way.

If it's one these two they're either
A: the area under the rudder trim tab
or
B: shading on the leading edge of the rudder

Bruce. It's a reflective mask, like a strip of tape, over the 'N9766Z'. This is unpaintable then, when you open it in FSX, the mask disappears and the 'N9766Z' is displayed, in black, over your new paint. It appears to be a protection against would-be repainters. Take a look at my post in 'edited screenshots'.

sorted it's your aircraft.cfg just modify this bit
atc_id=
N9766Z
so it looks like this
atc_id=
(leave it blank) on the default aircraft the aircraft codes are generated by the sim and not painted on.
