It's true, a lot of people don't know that some of these high performance demonstration teams are part of the military. Just like many astronaut's are part of the military, a lot of people just don't seem to clue in. It's almost scary.
The problem is that people see the Red Arrows as purely a military asset, which costs lots of money. What they don't appreciate is the amount of corporate interest and sponsorship they have, and of course the major overseas tours to the USA, the Middle and Far East for example aren't just "jollies" to thrill airshow spectators, but also major business pushes for prospective customers of UK PLC products; particularly the latter two.
