Just to verify: Got a new rig, Quadcore with Win7 (64bit) and wanted to verify that the following is done once, with following maintenance;  name defrags, not to use  "rundll32 advapi32,ProcessIdleTasks" before starting defrag.....?

Just want to be sure!  It say's ok to use in this step , but after this step, not to place:
"rundll32 advapi32,ProcessIdleTasks" ????

Nick's partial post:

++++++++++++++++++++DO NOT USE FOR VISTA+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

EDIT: VISTA USERS. IF YOU ARE USING THE TWEAKS IN THIS POST:  http://www.simviation.com/cgi-bin/yabb2/YaBB.pl?num=1208959973/271#271 you CAN use this section

Go to C:\Windows\Prefetch

You should now only see 2 files in there similarly named:

LAYOUT.ini
NTOSBOOT-B00DFAAD.pf

NOTE: If you DO NOT SEE THOSE FILES you probably shut down the TASK MANAGER which is a NO NO!! ONLY SHUT DOWN THE SERVICES I POSTED ABOVE IN THE LIST. UNLESS YOU KNOW EXACTLY WHAT YOU ARE DOING LEAVE THE REST AT DEFAULT

BLACK VIPER IS DANGEROUS... DONT TURN OFF SERVICES UNLESS YOU KNOW EXACTLY WHAT YOU ARE DOING! Many of the services posted at black vipers site should NOT be shut down!

If you have any other files in that folder, delete them now but leave the files NTOSBOOT and LAYOUT.ini alone.

Click START – RUN when the box appears, copy and paste this line EXACTLY as it is posted here:

rundll32 advapi32,ProcessIdleTasks

CLICK OK

You will see hard disk activity for about 10-20 seconds................

I followed the optimizations by Nick, it was said that the "tweaks" were ok for Win7....(Vista without the crap) and it said that you could run the process when doing the Prefetch part...it seems that that's the only time to add the line..?

It seemed that if you have Win7 you don't need to add that line before running O&O when doing reg maintenance..or first set up....Am I correct?

BTW,  I'm getting incredible results with Win7, new rig , and "have just begun to tweak"     Wink

I have Win7 Ult 64b and run O&O v12 and do not use the rundll32 advapi32,ProcessIdleTasks command at all during monthly maintenance.

It was back in December when I did the initial setup of my PC and at that time if memory serves me right there was some kind of problem or I did not think it acted right and I never tried it again.

Go use O&O v12 and don't worry about running the process idle tasks command.

There are no written and collected tweaks for FSX installed on Windows 7.

NickN mentioned somewhere that he would wait for the first servicepack before doing anything...

I guess it's OK to use the tweaks for Vista, but like you, and others, I'm a bit confused about what to use and what to skip!

You need O&O 12 for defrag Windows 7.
