I keep seeing the phrase "default Dash-800" in many posts but nether FS9 or FSX offers this aircraft. Or maybe it does and I don't have it. Does anyone?

I think you mean Dash 8??

It's an AI aircraft..for FS.9 at least

I think it can be converted to flyable but unless it is, it won't appear in the selection menu

It is in FSX also - in the airplane folder it is named DH_Dash8_100.

It is AI only (has no panel) so it does not show up in the aircraft selection dialogue.

if you want to make it flyable:

1st, do NOT have FS9/X running.  make a copy of the Dash 8 folder, and put it on the desktop.

go find a panel that you would like to put in it, then add your new panel folder to your "DESKTOP - DASH 8" folder.

Then you will need a program called AIRedit (http://www.simviation.com/simviation/?ID=200&page=2&mark=5895) to be able to open the .AIR file for the Dash 8.

Look at [int32] 105  Aircraft Type=2

change this to... Aircraft Type=1  (then close all open windows including the folder)

1 = Flyable
2 = AI

Rename the folder "dh_dash8_100_Flyable"

and put the folder back in your FS9/X folder.  You can now fly the Dash 8.

For FSX version of the Dash, you do not need to edit the air file - The absence or presence of a valid panel folder is what FSX uses to determine if should be displayed in the aircraft selection menu or not.

In a true FSX air file there is no line 105.

2=AI aircraft

I don't see the need for a duplicate. I suspect this could possibly cause conflicts. If you want to make the Dash 8 flyable simply modify the existing aircraft.

Seems like a fair amount of work when you could go over to Premier aircraft design and just D/L their Dash 8  Roll Eyes  http://www.premaircraft.com/
