I used to own a Stinson 108-3 and would love to have the original in my livery. The one I use for FSX is the freeware by M. Allen Richards downloadable as Stinson_ 108_3.zip. I don't have the skills to do this myself and I'm wondering if someone here could do it for me and if I could afford it?  This is what it looks like:

I can probably do it, if the model works in FS9. I don't have FSX. The biggest problem would be the squirrel. Do you have a larger version of the second image? Also, I need to know where to get the aircraft. SimV does not support file names for downloads. As to cost, it's freeware isn't it. Repainting is my hobby, I don't charge for something like this.
Cheers.  Smiley

If God intended aircraft engines to have horizontally opposed engines, Pratt and Whitney would have made them that way.

Thanks for the reply patchz.  The Stinson I downloaded as fsx_stinson_108.zip from fsnorthwest.net as freeware, and it appears to be programmed for FSX so I'm guessing (but do not know) that it would NOT work in FS9.  So I may have to end up seeing if I could learn something and jump in myself ....  which wouldn't be a bad thing ... just hard.  Huh  But I do appreciate your offering if it was for FS9.

I just checked Phil Talyor's list ( I guess you have to register to even see the downloads at FSnorthwest.net, because I couldn't find anything there), and this plane is indeed a FSX native plane.

I'm downloading the package now, and will check if I could do that paint.

Edit: the textures look rather easy to paint, I might be able to make that paint if you could supply me with a bigger picture of that squirrel.

Ah great ..... I'll dig through my old photo books in storage tomorrow and see if I can find a better pic of the squirrel.

Edit: Dang .... the best picture of the squirrel seems to be the first one in this post.  I found some of the pics which I took in 1970 and the quality was not all that good. The pics were 2 x 2 and no zoom ... way back.  I did do a scan of just the squirrel but it's not all that clear ... this would give you an outline that might work ... but not much more I'm afraid. The yellow actually has a little bit of gold in it .... and not a sunflower yellow like the Fairchild 24R.  Anyway .....  what do you think?

Well, I'll start off with the actual livery (without the squirrel), and then I'll see what I can do about the squirrel. I might try replacing it with another squirrel cartoon, I'll check if I can find anything similar.
It might take me some time though as I'm going on a trip later this week. I guess I'll finish it in a week or two.

Cool

P.S. do you know by any chance what is the font for the registration and text in the front (under the squirrel)?

Great ..... another squirrel would be fine. I'm finding old scans but not the actual physical photos ...  but here's another example of the squirrel on the passenger's side.

WOW!!! That is absolutely perfect.  Where on earth did you find that?  That is exactly the same squirrel ... the right color. Was that an image from an old comics character or something?  I still can't believe that you found this. Thanks very much ......  Cool Cool Cool

I found it on my PC on the end of my Wacom pen... in other words, I drew it.  Smiley

I've been a game developer for 25 years, primarily as an artist.

Looking back at the pictures, it's not a perfect copy... but it's a start. Call it an artists interpretation if you will... but one thing's for sure, it's original. Glad you like it.  Smiley

P.s. If you want the PSD (Adobe Photoshop) to do any modifications, let me know.

Here ya go... http://www.digital-essence.co.uk/misc/bushytail.7z

The background is used as the base colour... not really had time to cut the Squirrel out, but it isn't a difficult thing to do for anyone who wants to. Everything else is layered though.

Thanks mate! Awesome work.

Grizzard, as you might have seen in the Repaints forum I'm having some issues with aliasing the textures to the model, but I hope I'll get it sorted later this week.

Just in case you check back here Frequent Flyer, I have solved the texture issue.

Go into the aircraft.cfg and change the Model=1 to Model= in fltsim.3

Model 1 is the small tail version, so the textures are in different positions.

I've never touched the repainting, so it's learn as I go time, that solves the problem though.

You'll need to adjust the textures to get things in the right place, but here's what it looks like with your texture on it...

Definitely interested!  Smiley

I will be proud to fly this plane, especially as it has such a significant meaning. Glad I have been able to help someone achieve their dream so to speak.

I hope Grizzard has great fun taking his own plane to the skies.

Thank you.

Thanks so much to you both .... I really appreciate it.  I will proudly re-fly the tracks I made with this plane from 1970 to 1975 from it's home base in Yuma to Seattle/Boise/Chicago/Lexington/Denver/Las Vegas and many stops in between. Great memories ... and now I can redo them!!   Grin Grin Grin

You bet, although from Yuma scenery can get pretty boring if your not into rocks. :^)))   Arid and rocky but the sun always shines!!  My favorite passenger flight out of Yuma was to fly North up the Colorado River and land and have breakfast at a cafe on Martiniz Lake (You may have to land at Yuma Proving Grounds now though). Then up the Colorado taking a swing on the California side to wave at any climbers on Picacho Peak then head north and land at Blyth, Calif. (there was a P51 as I remember pushed up against a hanger with canvas hanging over half of it)  or you could do an exploratory trip eastward around sheep filled peaks  landing east of Castle Rock on one of the locals short airstrips to chew the fat and admire their desert collection of blue bottles, antiques and rocks, then after that, back on track up to Parker for fuel and checking for wild donkeys along the way. After lunch up to Havasu City with the Colorado on your left side and take a look at London Bridge at Havasu (yes, they actually bought it and shipped it over) .... from there to Bullhead City and jump in the free ferry across the Colorado to Laughlin, NV for a little gambling,  then back over to Kingman (east and somewhat out of the way) where at the time a bunch of Connie Tri-Tails were stored ... and maybe some used for freight, (I can't remember).  And the last leg landing at Boulder City flying over Hoover Dam (Boulder Dam) along the way ... and maybe one more, Las Vegas (KLAS).

Oh .... you probably want the airport designators?  :^))  No GPS in those days ... and all Dead Reckoning in my Stinson.

Here's what FSX might show.  KYUM (Yuma International R26/8) - KLGF (Yuma Proving Grounds) - KBLH (Blyth, CA) -  P20 (I believe this is Parker)  - KHII (Havasu City)  - KP06 (Bullhead City, AZ) -KIGM (Kingman, Az) and  61b (Boulder City).

Remember ... a lot of this is arid and dry, but normally georgous flying weather. If there are scenery files along the river that might make it more enjoyable.  I almost never flew high for personal flying and often landed on some of the very flat areas in the desert just for practice  ... not an airport or airstrip ... just desert.  Dumb ... but I did it.

If anyone finds that interesting I'll do more  .... :^))

Grizzard, that's ace... I'll certainly be making that my first flight. Smiley

I tend to play FSX by creating flight plans with a bit of purpose, rather than just picking an airport and taking off, as it makes the whole flight seem more worthwhile. I'm based in the UK, so it get's a bit boring flying round the local area.

A few years back, we went to Malta, so I recreated that flight, with the same aircraft and all. I'm not sure if I have the staying power to recreate our UK to Florida flight yet though.  Undecided

I collect a lot of vintage/prop planes, so I am planning on recreating some significant flights at some point... so what better way to start than one from someone who has first hand experience of it. I'll throw those airport designations into Plan-G as a flight plan, thank you. Smiley

LeeC,
I enjoy the vintage prop planes also and have been flying the Connie Tri-Tail a bit lately and trying to record with FRAPS. I say "trying" because of black bars that keep coming up on the sides ... which turned out to be a problem with my dual monitor setup ... but I had given up and already posted on youtube  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MyyHoTRtveI  Another prop vintage I enjoy is the Howard 500 and recently posted a video with it too ...   Grin

Anyway ... keep my email handy should you in the future want more routes in 42 Charlies history ...    Smiley Wink

Now .... I am anxiously waiting for my Stinson ...   Grin

Does that FS2004 Connie work fine in FSX? (Edit: s'okay, I found the 2004/FSX version)

My default plane is the Boeing S-307 Stratoliner at the mo, gorgeous plane, wonderful sound. I have a nice Beechcraft MSA D18S that I love too.

Been trying to get a working Electra L-10 but I can't find one with a properly working VC, I'm not a fan of 2D cockpits, I like to sit and look around, as you would in real life.  Smiley

Can't get that youtube vid to play, says it has a malformed video ID.  Sad

Hello!

I just wanted to congratulate you guys on a fabulous team effort, and to help someone relive his journeys in an aircraft that has special meaning to him.

It's nice to see that folks can work together, bringing their skills to the table. Starting with a picture, then moving to a STUNNING recreation of the squirrel motif, all the way to the complete A/C.

Grizzard, I hope you have a wonderful time flying Your personal A/C, and have many hours of enjoyment. Oh, and I love the old Capri! Smiley

My hats off to you all!

Alan Smiley

I've uploaded my repaint to Ozx: http://aussiex.org/forum/index.php?app=downloads&showfile=1060.
I would love to upload it to SimV but that requires presenting my real name, which I'm not interested in.
If any of you want you can upload it to SimV servers.

Also, LeeC has made a slightly modified version, I don't know if he has uploaded it anywhere yet  Cool

Hi all,
Here's a preview of the modified version I made, I haven't uploaded it anywhere, mainly because I don't know what I need to do... never done a repaint/upload before, so I will have to investigate the process.  Huh

I actually did two versions of the main texture, one at 1024x1024 and another at 2048x2048 for greater texture detail. I have to give credit to FrequentFlyer for taking this on in the first place, and ultimately, inspiring me to have a go. Texturing someone else's model isn't easy, especially with texture sheets that are as vague as these are.

I think people are right though, this (to me) is what a community is all about, someone with a dream, and people prepared to help them acheive that. I've always been a game developer, and in a way, that's the same kind of thing for me. People want great games to play, I try and help them get them.  Smiley

Both of them look great - first time I've seen the "Piper Stinson" logo.  Did that one have the 160 Franklin?

WOW!

The repaints look awesome! Something like this is what makes flight simming so satisfying! To have a 'personal' aircraft to fly around in and explore... and to have folks who are cognizant of that fact & willing to help out!

Good Job!

LeeC, you can easily upload it here to SimV. Here's the upload page.

This will explain how to upload your repaint:

Hope this helps,

  Cool

PS: I like the repaint! I just downloaded the plane and took it for a test flight. It is really nice.

Thanks Hughes-MDFlyer4 (you should all have 4 letter names like me  Wink )

Hopefully, people will be okay with a non-technical description. I'm not a flight enthusiast, I just like planes, flight sims and computer games, so I couldn't tell you anything about the plane other than what someone else tells me.

I will get it all into a package later and probably upload it tonight.

One other thing, the plane was from another site, is it okay to provide links to other sites?

Well I uploaded this repaint on Saturday but it still hasn't appeared. Anyone know how long it normally takes?

Good Morning, Lee!  Smiley

I ran a search for "Bushy Tail", and here's what I found:

http://www.simviation.com/simviation/download.php?ID=8213

Congrats again on a wonderful effort, to you & the rest of the collaborators!

I have a favor to ask... I've been thinking of a repaint for a Beaver I have in the hangar that could use a 'new' look... what files do you need for a repaint?

Have a great day!

Hi ViperPilot,
Ah, oddly enough, if you click on the "Go to page" link from the search results, it isn't there on the page. Smiley

As for the repaint, I can't do much right at the minute, my wife is going into hospital tomorrow, so I am a little distracted.  Sad

Other than that, in between that, writing 2 games and re-planning my work space in 3DS Max, time is a little limited but it's not impossible.

More than anything, what I need is a little motivation/inspiration to get me interested. As you've seen from this thread, Grizzard's dream was pure inspiration, and I was hooked.

So more than anything, I need to know a bit about the repaint and the plane that is being repainted. What do you have to base the repaint on? Photos, images etc... I don't have so much time to invent a paint scheme because art is a pretty much a secondary role at the moment behind coding/design... but if you have a scheme to re-create, then it's a lot easier, and therefore, less time consuming. Oh, and what plane is it? Just so I can have a look and check out the texture complexity and how well they have been laid out... Bushy Tail textures were a nightmare.

If it is easier, start a new thread and put anything relevant in there. It will probably be tomorrow night though before I can have a look, with everything going on tomorrow... but I promise I will look.

Cheers

Lee,

Thanks for the reply! I understand, and don't want to pull you away from more pressing needs. I have a De Havilland Beaver in the hangar that has a good repaint... I just wanted to add a couple of minor things to it, like some outlining around the registration # and possibly an anti-glare texture in front of the windscreen. If you want (and are able to), just let me know and I can send you whatever you need.

I sure hope everything is (and goes well) with your wife...

Thanks again!

I can't express enough of how thrilling it is for me have a couple of guys take time out of their lives to do this, so an enormous public thanks of appreciation goes to LeeC and FrequentFlyer for these efforts. This is truly an accurate portrayal of what I had and I do hope it gets uploaded for others to enjoy also. This plane was indeed one of the loves of my life in my younger years and I managed to accumulate about 500 hours of time in it, hunting, vacationing, and in business travel. An honest 4 place sporting a 165 hp Franklin it saw many small strips and a few dirt roads, like the one pictured below on a hunting trip in central Arizona. And it appears to still be in service in Oklahoma according to FAA records.

I see the upload is available now and works ... I just tried it to check it out.  And I forgot .... the Lincoln Capri.  It was a fun car ... but but ... when the 240Z came out I just HAD to have that one so I sold the Capri and picked up the Z.  In solo mode,  2nd gear would pin you to the back of the seat and felt like about 5 Gs.  A real kick .... but my 3 kids (and wife) got a little tired of the limited space.  Datsun lied about the speed though ... they said it would do 125 mph ...  And I could only get 118 mph!  Probably a good thing.  Just a little slower than my Stinson.  Grin Grin

Alan,
Can you send me a link to the plane model and the current repaint you have, along with a bit more detail about what you want doing please?

I can let the idea tinker about in the back of my mind, and at some point, I will be sat in front of my PC and it will happen. Sorry I can't be more specific on time than that.

... and thank you, I just wish things were going well... unfortunately, Chemo's a bitch and so is what it is fighting.  Sad

Cheers

Ah, it looks like the repaint is not going to be available here in the download pages.  Sad

It has requirements that are on another site (i.e. the base Stinson model) and as the author of those files has stated that they are not to be uploaded to another site, then I am not going to do that.

I will instead, upload the repaint to FSNorthwest, where the base files reside. It's a shame, but I have to honour the wishes of the base file author.

Cheers

Lee,

Thanks for the reply! I looked the model over last night, and decided that it was just fine as it is. The registration # was in the right color, and an anti glare shield is such a small thing that I thought to myself, "Al, you don't need that!"

I'll wait until I find an aircraft that warrants a repaint!  Wink

I sure hope things go well with your wife... I can appreciate your situation thoroughly; I went through the same thing with my mom. My thoughts and prayers will be with you and your family.  Sad

Keep your spirits up, and remember... you have the whole flight sim community behind you!

Alan Smiley

P.S. Sorry to hear you can't post Bushy Tail here, but I also applaud you on your integrity not to post the repaint here out of respect for the author's wishes!

Hi I've just seen this - shame we would have hosted this one under these exceptional circumstances had I known.... inconvenient as it was for users ..

The problem with outside links is that 100% they become dead after a short time rendering the file useless for users. This is why we have this general policy -- but like I have said we will make exceptions ..

Hey Lee,
Just Email the author, I guess he'll give you permission (just include credits to him) - I asked him if I may upload my version of the repaint to the web and he agreed.

I have emailed the author, so I'll just have to wait and see now.

I was going to upload it (the repaint) on FSNorthwest but man, that site is a mess. Shocked
There never seems to be any users online, seems to be 2 pages of downloads and errors all over the show. What a waste of a set of resources... sheesh.

Oh, and I only noticed tonight... this thread has 890 views!  Shocked

Just a small note... I have had a couple of emails from people struggling to register on FSNorthwest. I have emailed the site owner to see what the problem is. If anyone has the same problem, let me know and I will pass the message on to the site owner.

I half suspect that with the Stinson package being pretty large (at 25MB), the number of downloads it seems to have got recently (it's suddenly gone to
HOT
status  Cool) has probably used his bandwidth faster than he expected..

Cheers
Lee

Edit: Apparently the FSNorthwest site was undergoing maintenance, so he disabled the creation of new accounts for a short while... talk about bad timing  Grin

There is a Create Account link on the FSNorthwest  main page now, for anyone who wants the base files for this repaint.
