Bryan Ribbans here from www.seawings.co.uk

I have just purchased yesterday FSX and have downloaded a number of superb flying boats to fly - only trouble is that everywhere I go the scenery gives me an airfield to fly from, not a lake or sea.

Where can I go to fly from?

Many thanks for any help you can give me,

Best Regards,

Bryan

Your aviation maps, either sectional or wac (don't know what they call them in the UK), should show designated seaplane bases.  Look at large lakes, waterways adjacent to airports and major ports along the coastlines.  When you find a few, go your airport list in the FSX flight creation window and see if they are listed.  The seaplane venue will be with listings for the airport.

Well, unfortunately you can't choose specific water airports out of the "choose airport" in FSX. There are many in Alaska though.
And if you start at sea or lake near airport, you can slew ( pressing Y ) onto the body of water.

Take a look at this too:
http://www.microsoft.com/Products/Games/FSInsider/freeflight/Pages/WaterWaterEve...

Hope it helps.  Smiley

i'm not sure if they're is any waterway in england but you can find some in new york state,in florida and in louisiana. and of course in alaska. imagine i live in canada, province of quebec and there's none. you load your plane then go see the map, the waterways are represented by a little anchor sign.

You can also put your seaplane on a runway near water, bring up the map, and drag the plane icon over water.. just watch that the altitude matches up.

Good old Microsoft.

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?displaylang=en&FamilyID=0d690e1a...

This is pdf Designated "Water Runways" in Flight Simulator X. It mostly contains water runways in the U.S. I have not seen any that have default scenery, but Mocats "Lands End" series (also U.S.) is pretty cool.

.....now we need the same thing for FS2004... Wink...!

For trips around the San Francisco Bay Area, there is a Water Runway in Marin County, close to Golden Gate Bridge:

Commodore Centre (22CA).

Also, close by, up the Sacramento River, past Concord  Buchanan (KCCR):

Lost Isle (Q87).

Thanks to you all for the handy hints.

Start with a landplane and switch to a flying boat - now why did'nt I think of that!

Incidentally, is there such a thing as a 'half-size' joy stick or Control Yoke?? Just looking at what's available and they are either from the Starship Enterprise and unrealistic for what I want or just too big in size.....

If you choose Honolulu Int., you get the choice of several water runways where you may take off from.  They also can be taxied to like land runways with an amphibian.

This is the only one that offers water runways right out of the box that I know of.

Hello, Plugpennyshadow, many thanks for this tip, I'll give it a try.

Still looking for a realistic control yoke, though.

Don't know if this is in the library here but at Flightsim you can get this great list of all US water start locations:

Name: uswater.zip Size: 8,474 Date: 01-03-2004 Downloads: 911
FS2004 U.S. Water Runways And Seaports. A comprehensive list of all known U.S. water runways and seaport facilities for FS2004. None have been found outside the United States. Many of these facilities are adjacent, but all are listed as available in the FS2004 runway listings. By Mike Davis.

Hope that info is useful.

Hi "seawings"... Wink

I like flying bugsmashers in and out of camps and the only good freeware scenery I found and use is MoCat's Snow Dog Tours available right here at Main>FSX>Scenery and there are several to choose from on pages 17, 18 and 19.

If you have downloaded some large Flyingboats then the approaches in and out can be a little tight along with the docking.
The Microsoft Beaver works very well along with the Republic Seabee also available here at Simviation Downloads.

I believe I am using MoCats Snow Dog Tours PartV and quite happy with it however I understand it only works in FSX.  There are many many seaplane camps/bases to choose from with some navigational sites and good cross country trips are easy to plan.  A small Amphibian Aircraft would be nice as many of these seaplane camps/bases are near paved airfields.

I printed off the .pdf many moons ago.....it's about 18 pages worth, with about 35 to 40 per page. Cheesy

But if I wanna go fly a boat from anywhere, I just pick an airport near a chunk of water then slew til I hit liquid.

Lake Lucerne is one of my favorites....and the Black Sea....and the fjords of Norway...... Smiley
