The man was apparently already on the government's no-fly list of suspected terrorists, the official claimed.
That raises more questions than answers

The only thing that disturbs me is how this man got onto the flight...and not only that but how he got on with these type of explosives. Even if you say they arent bad, I still take them as bad. I guess ill have to start worrying again about getting on a plane...the 9/11 excuse wont work anymore with me.
Glad there okay, what a horrible scare on Christmas.

The problem is that airport security on the whole are looking for liquids and metal. There are so many common everyday items or chemicals that when alone are harmless. Bring them together and they are deadly. Ask the average (ex) IRA terrorist what can be made to explode that can be found in the cupboard under your sink or behind your toilet and you would never fly again. Bearing in mind that just about everyone has a detonator in their pocket, a mobile phone and even better it it has a flash, complete security is just not possible. The only way around this is an absolute ban on hand luggage and pocket items in the cabin. EVERYTHING in the hold, but this is not practical.

As I've always said, the TSA pats themselves on the back for no 9/11 attacks since they were created. I simply say, its because the terrorists haven't tried.

He was on a transfer from Nigeria, basically that tells the complete story.
He probably never went groundside at Schiphol so he was not checked there.

You will know more about Schiphol Airport than me but I find that difficult to believe. From what it says
HERE
"At Schiphol, all passengers,
including transfer passengers
, will be subjected to an extensive security check at the gate"

That check is a complete joke on schengen flights
If you dont look too suspicuos they wont notice. Just bag check and some scanner thing that freaks out on your shoe lace rings.
But Lagos managed to book a listed person on a US bound flight... Before pissing on EHAM they'd better find out how THAT happened (probably bribes)

And I'd say you're right. They'ed rather search a 90 year old grandmother instead of Mohommed or Achmed passing through security because it's not "PC".
They just haven't been trying.

Meaning? Every time I flew back from Lagos to Amsterdam my bags, suitcases and pockets were checked and searched.
Everytime I flew from Amsterdam to Lagos I could pass without being stopped, checked or searched....

Thinking about making a new rule that makes all passengers stay in there seats 1 hour prior to landing.

This incident happened about 20 minutes out did it not? So, he was already in his seat for arrival. How is this rule going to help?
Anybody who is that intent on blowing an airliner up could simply go to the toilet say 1 1/2 hours before landing with a wash bag, prepare and carry out the attack when in their seat later. It would appear that that story is just mean to calm and reassure passengers, but in reality it won't really help at all.

This new rule is about as effective as the TSA. It is all for appearances and to make the soccer moms of the world feel safe. As this incident shows, any determined terrorist will find a way to do what they want, even without shoes, liquids, or whatever other crazy rules they can come up with.

Personally I'm waiting for the day we all have to strip down and put on hospital gowns for a flight. But even then there are been incidents of terrorists hiding explosives in "other" places. It is funny how no other form of transportation receives as much scrutiny, from both the government and those who seek to do harm. Just as the 9/11 attacks did, they shut down the airspace system, and the country, for days, even weeks in some cases. And changed the world forever...

Well they should have done a full check on that flight as it came from Nigeria...
You know, where Air France almost crashed because there were cows walking on the runway.
And where Hydro Air landed on a closed runway that was completely broken up for maintenance because they forgot to turn the lights off

Wikipedia on Lagos Airport:
Quote:
Accidents and incidents
On 23 November 1996, hijackers forced Ethiopian Airlines Flight 961, bound from Mumbai and Addis Ababa to Abidjan through many stops (including Lagos), to crash into the Indian Ocean.
On 30 January 2000, Kenya Airways Flight 431 was originally intended to fly from Nairobi to Lagos to Abidjan, but the flight diverted to Abidjan. The aircraft hit the water after takeoff to Lagos.
On 28 November 2003, Lagos control cleared Hydro Air 501, a Boeing 747-200 from Brussels Airport for a landing at Runway 19R. The aircraft ended up hitting a stack of asphalt, then slewed left with its first engine in contact with the surface until the nose wheel came to rest in a drainage ditch. The Ministry of Aviation report concluded that the cause of the accident was that the aircraft was cleared to land on a runway that was “supposed” to have been closed.
On 22 October 2005, Bellview Airlines Flight 210, bound for Abuja, crashed after takeoff, killing everyone on board.
Ethiopian, Kenya Airways and Bellview had nothing to do with the airport itself. Hydro Air was a mistake, a stupid one sure.
They should have done a search on all passengers, like they do in every country. But to say that they had to do a full check as it came from Nigeria is ridiculous. Nigeria is a terrorist state now?

I believe the service from Lagos to Amsterdam is operated by KLM/Air France. Onward transit to Detroit would involve a transfer to the Delta flight at Schiphol Airport. That's where any security breach took place. The individual involved had a valid US Visa & was not on a no-fly list.

He was however on the TSA watch list, which means he should of at least been checked more thoroughly.
There is a list of countries, which I believe includes Nigeria, that don't meet screening requirements for entry into the US. That is why I believe that flight goes through Amsterdam. Of course from the sound of it, all he had was a bunch of firecrackers, which wouldn't be that hard to sneak through I would bet.
The truth of the whole matter is this. The only way to stop terrorism is intelligence. Once a person has reached the airport, they already know how to get through security and whatever other traps are there for them. That is the disadvantage airport security has, the enemy has all the time in the world to observe and research.

Yes, we would just like to advertise that fact that we cocked up. I mean if an engineering graduate can't get it right on the night, then it must be time to pack up and go home
Or a resounding success. After all it will now take you an extra three hours to get through security

That is just it, they got us to react and start a panic. They don't even need to blow up the plane to accomplish their mission.
