This incident happened about 20 minutes out did it not?  So, he was already in his seat for arrival.  How is this rule going to help?

Anybody who is that intent on blowing an airliner up could simply go to the toilet say 1 1/2 hours before landing with a wash bag, prepare and carry out the attack when in their seat later.  It would appear that that story is just mean to calm and reassure passengers, but in reality it won't really help at all.

This new rule is about as effective as the TSA.  It is all for appearances and to make the soccer moms of the world feel safe.  As this incident shows, any determined terrorist will find a way to do what they want, even without shoes, liquids, or whatever other crazy rules they can come up with.

Personally I'm waiting for the day we all have to strip down and put on hospital gowns for a flight.  But even then there are been incidents of terrorists hiding explosives in "other" places.  It is funny how no other form of transportation receives as much scrutiny, from both the government and those who seek to do harm.  Just as the 9/11 attacks did, they shut down the airspace system, and the country, for days, even weeks in some cases.  And changed the world forever...

Well they should have done a full check on that flight as it came from Nigeria...

You know, where Air France almost crashed because there were cows walking on the runway.
And where Hydro Air landed on a closed runway that was completely broken up for maintenance because they forgot to turn the lights off

Russian planes: IL-76 (all standard length ones),  Tu-154 and Il-62, Tu-134 and An-24RV&&&&AI flightplans and repaints can be found here

Wikipedia on Lagos Airport:

Quote:
Accidents and incidents
On 23 November 1996, hijackers forced Ethiopian Airlines Flight 961, bound from Mumbai and Addis Ababa to Abidjan through many stops (including Lagos), to crash into the Indian Ocean.

On 30 January 2000, Kenya Airways Flight 431 was originally intended to fly from Nairobi to Lagos to Abidjan, but the flight diverted to Abidjan. The aircraft hit the water after takeoff to Lagos.

On 28 November 2003, Lagos control cleared Hydro Air 501, a Boeing 747-200 from Brussels Airport for a landing at Runway 19R. The aircraft ended up hitting a stack of asphalt, then slewed left with its first engine in contact with the surface until the nose wheel came to rest in a drainage ditch. The Ministry of Aviation report concluded that the cause of the accident was that the aircraft was cleared to land on a runway that was “supposed” to have been closed.

On 22 October 2005, Bellview Airlines Flight 210, bound for Abuja, crashed after takeoff, killing everyone on board.

Ethiopian, Kenya Airways and Bellview had nothing to do with the airport itself. Hydro Air was a mistake, a stupid one sure.

They should have done a search on all passengers, like they do in every country. But to say that they had to do a full check as it came from Nigeria is ridiculous. Nigeria is a terrorist state now?

I believe the service from Lagos to Amsterdam is operated by KLM/Air France. Onward transit to Detroit would involve a transfer to the Delta flight at Schiphol Airport. That's where any security breach took place. The individual involved had a valid US Visa & was not on a no-fly list.

He was however on the TSA watch list, which means he should of at least been checked more thoroughly.

There is a list of countries, which I believe includes Nigeria, that don't meet screening requirements for entry into the US.  That is why I believe that flight goes through Amsterdam.  Of course from the sound of it, all he had was a bunch of firecrackers, which wouldn't be that hard to sneak through I would bet.

The truth of the whole matter is this.  The only way to stop terrorism is intelligence.  Once a person has reached the airport, they already know how to get through security and whatever other traps are there for them.  That is the disadvantage airport security has, the enemy has all the time in the world to observe and research.

May as well put all passengers in cryo sleep, or atleast knock 'em out with gas for all flights... Roll Eyes

Yes, we would just like to advertise that fact that we cocked up. I mean if an engineering graduate can't get it right on the night, then it must be time to pack up and go home Grin

Or a resounding success. After all it will now take you an extra three hours to get through security Angry

That is just it, they got us to react and start a panic.  They don't even need to blow up the plane to accomplish their mission.
