I'm still wondering how so many members here appear to use the latest version of Photoshop for repaints & screenshots. I don't believe that's legit either.
I use Photoshop CS3, completely legit, for my repaints, but I get it from work. I haven't upgraded to CS4 yet though.
Before, I used Illustrator 10, which I bought in a student version. Worked fine too, so you don't need Photoshop. PS has more possibilities though, but have a look at my old work (WoP P-51 & P-47, B-24's, Safir), that's all Illustrator (which is vector based btw).
I have done one paint in GIMP, works fine too, but then my boss gave me CS3...
I now make the repaint in Photoshop, but draw things like noseart etc in Illustrator CS3 and then import it into PS.
Snake, if you want to start, make sure you start with a model that comes with a (good) paintkit, makes life soooo much easier
