Per your suggestion, removed the 8800 card and uninstalled the driver 191.07.  Installed the 8400 card and changed driver to 185.85 - good for all 8 series cards without the lousy reputation of the other.  The game wants to be good but still is not getting a graphics injection..  Right now, here's how it looks.  ADD/REMOVE Programs NVIDIA DRIVERS  1,092.00MB  NVIDIA Physx  121.00MB  FS2004  2789.00MB  Both HKEY Registries look fine.  C:\NVIDIA\WinXP\185.85  C:\WINDOWS..WINDOWS\System...WINDOWS\System32\Drivers - all good.  Here's a potential problem - there is nothing in C:\Program Files for NVIDIA Corporation and there a two empties at C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\NVIDIA Corporation-nv5356...and...C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\NVIDIA Corpoation\Nview.  Hope this has a lot more meaning for you than it does for me  Smiley.

I can't tell you much, except the nVidia control Panel should be in that folder in Start Menu, etc.
All I have in the NVIDIA folder in Application Data is a bin file (nvdevice)... not sure what that does. Grin

I don't know much about either card (I use a 7950), but you might also try installing the Coolbits application- it alters the registry so that you can access all controls for the nVidia cards, including overclocking. It can be useful to fiddle (conservatively) with these settings.

And more than once, I've had to confirm in FS9 as well as in the control panel that AA is being done only thru the card, etc.

That start menu folder "NVIDIA Corporation-nv5356" is still empty.  Intensive Googling hasn't revealed any clues.  Am putting the 8800 card back in the slot, since the other makes no difference.  Maybe, with the extra hour, I'll catch a break - or maybe not  Smiley.

Sorry I couldn't be more helpful... but there's bound to be a solution; keep flailing away and you'll find it.  Wink

Now I know how a dog feels chasing his/her tail.  Having tried so many methods of uninstalling and reinstalling - older driver, current driver and even the new beta.  There always seems to be a piece missing or out of place.  If there was a diagram, similar to a family tree, that showed what files each driver created and where, in XP, they were located, it might produce an answer

I'm going to show my ignorance here. I have an Nvidia card, granted it's an old one, & the only NVIDIA folder I can find is on my C: drive - C:\NVIDIA. I can't remember if I've ever updated the drivers but it works extremely well with all my MS sims. I've always accessed the display settings by right-clicking my desktop & selecting Properties.

I still think you have a driver conflict of some sort. I've never used it but I'm wondering if nHancer would help. http://www.nhancer.com/

I also think the gurus in the Hardware forum would soon fix this for you. http://205.252.250.26/cgi-bin/yabb2/YaBB.pl?board=hardw

The old adage "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" must have been written for graphics cards and drivers.  That C:\NVIDIA folder is just the mole hill at the foot of the mountain.  Am heeding your advice and knocking on the 'hardware' door.  From what I've read, it appears at least one in ten Nvidia owners are having problems - it's good to not be alone  Smiley.

Not to rub it in, but I have had nothing but really good results with every nVidia card I've ever used. Maybe I have been lucky. I can certainly understand the frustration and fear you feel when nothing works. You are afraid to begin noodling around with settings and things that with one keystroke or one click could delete necessary files and create all kinds of problems.  This is how I feel after I got "facebooked" and had to put in new hard drives and set this machine up all over again. I now have a multi-layered system in place to keep the bad stuff out of my computer...

As, I'm sure, have many others.  The more I play with this problem, the more certain I am that it was self-inflicted.  All indications are that the card is happy and ready to produce graphics but the game is still very hesitant in the 'settings' and 'create a flight' modes.  Going direct to 'fly now' is fastest but still nothing above 12 or so FPS - though flight is possible it's pretty sketchy at those low rates.  Exiting the game seems to be the biggest stumbling block and I usually resort to 'end task' - 'end program'.  I'm wondering if a reload of XP would be of any help?

It does sound like something is going on with your FS rather than your graphics card. I'm guessing you can watch a DVD or something on the system with out any bother??

I'm no expert, but when programmes get hung up on me, its allways because something is wrong with them, or parts of them are being used by another programme that is still running. Strange as how you have done a re-install and its still going on. Wish i could help more, but like i said, im no expert.

At least we're both Scottish  Smiley.  Take a look at 'Freeware Screenshots'.  Tried the FSX demo and posted a couple of screenies so we know the card works OK.  Very tempting but doubt if my rig could handle the full version.
