Okay, as the title says... I would like some comparisons... Real Environment Pro VS. HDE Clouds.

I already have REP FS9, but as I see HDE more and more and more... I am starting to wonder.

The main thing that I want to know, is How big of a FPS hit do you get from CLEAR SKIES vs. Major Thunderstorm

I am thinking of updating the weather.... I like Real Environment Pro, but with some of my planes that are a little heavier on the FPS side, things tend to slow way down when you are trying to come in on final with a major thunderstorm going on and you are only getting 5 FPS!

some pics that I can show of my clouds as of current......

As far as the cloud textures go, I'm not sure REP even replaces those.  I think it's just sky colors, water, and airport ground textures, etc..

Quote:
This package includes:

1. New sun, sun6, corona1, sunglow and suneffect.cfg

2. New aircraft spotlight

3. New airport lights that simulate a glow onto the surface

4. New Envmap (affects reflections)

5. Revised AquaPro 2006 Bright & Dark versions (base water color, wave animation and environment effects that also simulate cloud reflections in the water)

6. Trees courtesy of Feng Zhu's TreeGen v1.0

7. New runway textures (per selected WX Environment)

8. New asphalt textures (per selected WX Environment)

9. New concrete textures (per selected WX Environment)

10. New tarmac textures (per selected WX Environment)

11. Taxiway markings (per selected WX Environment)

12. Sky & environment textures

13. 3D Environment Bitmap

Technically, you could run them both together if that is the case, just set up REP first, and then run HDE over it, trust me, the HDE sky colors look way more realistic than the REP do.

REP & REX are big on providing 'fantasy world' sky colors that in my 33 years of life, I've not see in the real world.  I've seen most of what HDE offers though.

Also... HDE offers a very nice grass replacement, I still can't decide if I like it or the REX grass that works in FS9 better yet.  The REX grass looks more detailed, but the blades of grass are gigantic, whereas the HDE grass blades look properly scaled, but just a little less detail. I'm currently running the HDE grass to see how it grows on me, and it does look nice.

HDE also comes with a new env.bmp which is the worlds reflection on the skin of your plane, and IMO, it's the best looking one I've ever used. It's not over-exaggerated like most I've used, and it seems to look realistic in all weather and lighting conditions.

As for the HDE multi res textures, that's a nice feature as you can pick the ones that perform best for you, but they all look very similar on my system. I did try them all, and I settled on the Medium set.
I don't have a super HD rocking system, so I don't need to run the very high set, and I see no impact on my FPS between clear & cloudy. (mind you, I set my weather up in such a way as to maximize my performance, yet still see tremendous cloud cover.  Wink )
