Hi guys, just a question here. My girlfriends birthday is in two weeks and she said she would like some new speakers for her PC. My budget is less than 300$ so I was thinking Bose.
http://bing.search.sympatico.ca/?q=bose&mkt=en-ca&setLang=en-CA
The companion 3 @ 250$ ( plus tax/ under 300$)
We like to crank up the tunes on Saturday nights. Is there a better deal for the bucks? Or should I dip into the well and put out more money?

Edit: The link isnt the best.  Embarrassed
Maybe this one..

Thanks Mazz, Those look great. I'm going to see if I can find those on display so I can hear them. This is for a desktop. I have heard the Bose and they were amazing for thier size.

$300 for a pair of desktop speakers? Way to expensive. I've been using these for the past nine(!) years and they absolutely blow away any Bose system.

Looks impressive, Crash! Would they still be available after 9 years? Keeping in mind I have blown two sets of cheaper speakers in 2 years.  (Logitech and Altech)  Cry

I did a short search for it. Here in Holland they are no longer available. What I wanted to point out that it's bit of a waste to spend $300 on a set of desktop speakers. Bose speakers are a bit overrated. Same as B&O sound and video systems. Looks impressive but the quality (in my opinion) isn't much more than mediocre.

Go shopping, go to a good computer store and compare speakersets. Don't go for the most expensive first, check out the cheaper ones too. Read reviews on the net and you'll see expensive isn't always better.

Yeah, I have been looking around and in the mindset that "shiny" is what women want! It is good to get unbiased opinions, such as here. Now that I have my mind beyond furniture, I will focus on performance.

There is Bose and there is Bose. Take the professional equipment from Bose and you have some great stuff. The consumer products however are only relying on the Bose brand name. Although they sound ok, you can get the same quality for far less money.

Crash Wink

Edit: For my home cinema set I've been relying on ELAC speakers for the past 20 years or so...

Wow, Crash, that looks wild. I have nearly 1500 watts of JBL speakers in the living room. When we crank it, windows rattle and pictures fall off the wall.    Wink

A side discussion on sound gear.  Ive never fallen for the More Money Better Quality argument.  Sure, you can get some excellent stuff in the high dollar number, but I go for what is serves my needs effectively for a modest dollar number.

My entertainment center surround sound system for example?  I purchased an Insignia brand model HC049417 cause I was more interested in all the input and output options it offered.  Come to it the thing sounds good and performs all functions well.  It has six discrete composite video (red/white audio, yellow video w/S-video alternate), six discrete stereo audio inputs, two ditital audio inputs/outputs and two TV IN inputs.  Two composite video w/S-video out serve my TV AND computer.

Im running a DVD player into it with S-Video and digital audio.  A VCR by S-video and stereo audio. An iPod dock with S-Video and digital audio. Two tape decks.  A turntable, yes, a turntable.  An HD radio receiver (the Insignia does have built in AM/FM).  The TV audio signal and the satellite audio signal in.  And the remote is relatively simple and easy to use.

Speakers for this system come from a defunct Aiwa stereo that had front/back stereo plus center speaker.  The surround unit has ports for a subwoofer and two side speakers as well.  I do not use these as the five speakers serve my needs in my small house.

$149 on sale at Circuit City, already had the speakers and had to buy some speaker wire and connectors to run the wires in the attic as well as buy some cables to run all the equipment to it.  I get complements all the time as to how good the system sounds.  And all for less than one speaker from some companies.

Moral?  Get what sounds good to YOU.  Not what the graphs, pundits and hyped company ads say is good.  And what the old budget can afford.

I am in a way in a the same boat. About space. I have, in an 8 x 12 foot office, 3 PC's, 3 sets of speakers, two printers,AM/FM radio reciever, television, two satelite recievers one for my PC and one for the TV, 1 dvd player and one VHS video player both wired to the PC and the TV,1 router, Shelving with PC hardware I might need someday, and Patties huge Salt and Pepper shaker collection. Oh, and some joysticks. The wiring is huge task. Miles of wire, I guess, but yet I don't want to go wireless with any of it.   Wink Almost forgot the phones and fax machine.
