The Jeppeson Plates Package won't cooperate. It says corrupt file when I try to unzip. Something I'm doing wrong, maybe?

Edit: Downloaded the file and it unzipped perfectly into 1 very large PDF file. I used WinRAR to unzip.

I generally recommend Izarc

Like Winzip but completely free and will handle more extensions /formats. I've been thrashing it for 2 years & never had a single problem.

What I would NOT recommend is the default Window zip utility ...  Roll Eyes

Hi Pete,

I've been reading comments like this for a couple years now. I have XP Home SP3 and I have unzipped more files with Windows zip utility than the Pope's got Cardinals, without having a single problem.

Could you give a little detail as to why you recommend not using the Windows utility?

Many thanks in advance,
Joe

Yes very simple. I get 1000's of emails about site problems. A large proportion of these are to do with zip files or browser problems and a large proportion of these problems are resolved by using an alternative non MS product. IE I suggest FF. Most cases 'thanks problem solved' . Zip files? Try Winzip or much better Izarc. Same. 'Thank you!'. 1000's over the years. Very rarely does this simple solution not work.

I don't have the time or interest to go into all the variables of user systems - anti virus - firewalls - other stuff on their PC's.  What I do know is MS takes the view that most people don't want to 'open the hood' so to speak and therefore I think it bites off more than it can chew, (too many user variables that MS did not think of) .... User problems.

Suggest an alternative software. Problem solved. It generally works.

Plus that windows zip thing is CLUNKY ...

In my case I suppose, there was no indication by the author that this was an RAR file. Even after downloading the file and mouseing over the folder it still didn't indicate RAR file and there lies my confusion.
I did get quick and precise help, which is one more reason why I visit Simvation every day.

As the file is named JeppPlates.zip I assume it's a zipfile. This is a very large file or I would download it to see for myself.

I've checked out a lot of files downloaded from this site over the last 10 years or so. In most cases I find the Windows utility works fine. Very easy to use & a zipped file can be opened by double-clicking on it like an ordinary folder. I can't think why Pete describes it as clunky.

In all that time I've only encountered a couple that refused to cooperate. I don't know why but put it down to the software the author used to zip it up. If WinZip won't extract the files I have several other utilities that will usually do the trick.

I didn't know windows had a zip function.  Cheesy

WinRAR, Izarc, & 7-zip.

Between those three, if it won't open, I shouldn't be opening it.  Wink

WinXP Home SP3:
just a part of my desktop, right click a folder, SEND TO > Compressed Zip Folder.... it will make a .zip folder of whatever the original is.

...

in XP, to open a .zip file using the XP Zip Utility Function...

1st, save the .zip to your desktop, then right click and hit EXTRACT ALL..

...

It will bring up the following dialog box

...

Follow the prompts, and you can tell it WHERE you want the files to be saved.
