In July 1938 the Piper J-3 entered production. It would continue to be produced until 1947, by which time over 19,000 of these trainer aircraft had been built.

Yes, they used them in WW2 and Korea, and they also used more modern variations in Vietnam.
They were still making Pipers based very closely to the J-3 until 1994.
