I installed us_wa_nc.zip (US North Cascades Mountains and Northwest Washington Coast by Holger Sandmann) recently from SimV library.  During a check flight I noticed the area north of Seattle up to the Snohommish area looked like a black & green checker-board.   There was a patch of this on Mercer Island & to the south of Renton.    I removed the scenery but it didn't help.  The checker-board look remained.     Worse - I saw a lot of it around JFK.    But, when I get to these black square blocks they pop into normal scenery.  I've checked other parts of the world & all looks well.

My FS9 is a new installation.  The original Maxtor HD died after 6 months & was replaced with a Western Digital, which died after 2 months, so this Hitachi HD is a new one.     I'd appreciate help to get rid of the black bits.    I've got Silverwings scenery & reinstalled that but the black blocks remain.   Huh    I'm wondering if I should replace the  Namw folder from a backup copy...........or.............. Undecided

gypsymoth,

This is not a problem with your Cascades install.

Look in the ..\Scenery\World\texture\.. folder for the '033b2su7.bmp' file. If the file size is 33kb then this is the problem.

The file is installed by Silver Wings and was mistakenly saved without MIPS. The fix is to open the file in DXTBmp or Image Tool and resave with MIPS included.
You can download DXTBmp here-http://www.btinternet.com/~mnwright/programs/dxtbmp.htm

If you haven't worked with DXTBmp: Open the file in DXTBmp. On the right side of the program screen find the MIPS section. Put a check mark in 'Include when saving'. Save the file. It should save in DXT 1 format, and the new file size should be 43kb.

If you prefer, I can e-mail the file.

Hello Dave.  Sorry for not getting back to you before now.    That file is 32.0 KB (36 kb on disk) & thanks for your explanation.   I left a message at the old hangar but have had no reply yet.     I'll have a go at doing what you suggest & let you know how I get on  Roll Eyes     I'm very busy for the next 2 days now though.   Very odd however, that SW worked beautifully in the last drive............. Shocked
Cheers,   Terry.

Had a quick go at this Dave.  I opened the DXT manipulator but couldn't find anything to check to save to include Mips....so...I went to a backup HD copy of FS9 from when it all worked well & found that file.   It works like a dream.   Thanks for your help yet again!  Terry.  Oh - the Cascades scenery
works well to & looks great.   Mt Baker here I come   Cool

Terry,

Good to hear you got it working. The only drawback to using an FS9 texture in SW texture sets is the texture might not match the rest of the set, and stand out some.

For future reference: In DXTBmp, if you do not see the right sidebar with the MIPS option, on the menu click 'Prefs' and then 'Show Alpha Channel'. You'll then have the sidebar with Alpha and MIPS options.

I should have explained better - that file was from the backed-up Silver Wings from a nice working FS9.   Thanks for tips for using DXTBmp....I see what you mean  Roll Eyes
