Every Alaska scenery for small airports and/or float plane bases requires some other add-on, that I don't have, often payware? Can anyone tell me why? I found several good small airport scenerys for the state of Washington, but none for Alaska. Now where is that frustrated smiley?  Undecided Angry

Can't answer your specific question......... but I can highly recommend the free Glacier Bay enhancement by Holger Sandmann and friends.

It is a two part download which will blow you away.  There are a number of other free addons which compliment this fine work also.

It is available at several sites.

Ok, this is probably what I wanted, just a bunch at once instead of several indivdual files, plus the enhancements and ground textures.

Landscape and scenery enhancements for parts of Southeast Alaska and adjacent B.C./Yukon. Terrain mesh, accurate land class with custom ground textures, detailed shorelines, lakes, rivers, and glaciers.
Towns, cabins, lodges. 17 airfields, 16 seaplane bases, 20 airstrips 7 heliports.
Compatible with most third-party add-ons. Documentation and configurator incl. By Holger Sandmann and Team. Part 1 of 2. 88MB

Download in progress.
I had seen references to this but not the actual file description. If it doesn't bog my system down, I'm sure I will love it. Thanks for the help guys. Smiley Smiley Smiley

Back to the same situation. After downloading I read the readme file which informed me I had to have Microsoft's .Net Framework. It then went on to say, "If you have concerns about the use of the .Net framework please do not install Glacier Bay v2." I looked at it once, but it appeared to be over my head so I do not have it. I really don't even know what it is or does. Is there any reason I should be concerned about using it?

Not at all. The way I understand it, is that the .Net framework is a sort of programming language, a bit like C++. Many developers use it. Once you download it, just run the installer (will take a few minutes)and you should be set. The only thing to know is which version of .Net to get.

Everything you download is covered, it seems, by some type of disclaimer or prerequisite.  Life can only be lived once, so I've heard. Go with it - I did and it looks very nice if you're partial to beautiful mountains, fiords, glaciers etc.

As Groundbound1 has said, there is nothing to fear about installing any of the Net framework packages.

These are use by many different programs as you will discover over time.

The important thing is to get to version specified in the Glacier Bay documentation.

When you go to the MS download site you will likely see a number of different versions available.  These are NOT updates as you might be inclined to think - these are separate versions and various programs will be looking for a specific version of the Net program.

I currently have three different versions installed and they work beautifully.

just in case if you are sitting there asking yourself "i have no idea what it does, what it is for, or what version to get"  have a read on this::

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=333325FD-AE52-4E35-B531...

This is the most up-to-date version of .NET Framework.

the way " I " interpret it to work, is it is *SLIGHTLY* like FlightSims FSUIPC.   It allows certain MICROSOFT programs to talk to other MICROSOFT programs a lot easier on your computer, and back and forth to Microsoft Developers (when you send error reports).

I currently have 1.1, 1.1-Hotfix, 2.0, 3.0, 3.5 SP1....... and everything is working supurbly for me.  May want to look into getting ALL of the .Net Frameworks just to make sure that you are covering all bases so that no matter what scenery / file / program you try to download, you will have the .NET it requires.

Overview
.NET Framework 3.5 builds incrementally on the new features added in .NET Framework 3.0. For example, feature sets in Windows Workflow Foundation (WF), Windows Communication Foundation (WCF), Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF) and Windows CardSpace. In addition, .NET Framework 3.5 contains a number of new features in several technology areas which have been added as new assemblies to avoid breaking changes. They include the following:

  • Deep integration of Language Integrated Query (LINQ) and data awareness. This new feature will let you write code written in LINQ-enabled languages to filter, enumerate, and create projections of several types of SQL data, collections, XML, and DataSets by using the same syntax.
  • ASP.NET AJAX lets you create more efficient, more interactive, and highly-personalized Web experiences that work across all the most popular browsers.
  • New Web protocol support for building WCF services including AJAX, JSON, REST, POX, RSS, ATOM, and several new WS-* standards.
  • Full tooling support in Visual Studio 2008 for WF, WCF, and WPF, including the new workflow-enabled services technology.
  • New classes in .NET Framework 3.5 base class library (BCL) that address many common customer requests.

Found out I already had 2.0 on my machine and did not know it. Installed Glacier Bay and I have one comment and one question.
Comment:
DAMN!!!  Shocked Shocked Shocked

Question: Is there any way to make the textures Global?  Roll Eyes Smiley
I lied. I have another comment. I can't wait to get my RAM so I can start turning slider bars up.
Thanks for all the help guys. Screenshots forthcoming when I can quit exploring long enough to actually take a screenshot.  Grin

I take it that you are impressed with GB.  I was pretty sure you would be.

Be sure to read and follow the instructions in the manual. As an example, changing the Vertex setting in your FS9.cfg file from the default 19 value to 20 does make the mountains and valleys even more impressive.  (Note - a value of 21 is the maximum FS2004 will recognize)

This freeware offerring is just like his payware Misty Fjords and Tongass Fjords (other areas of Alaska) - extraordinary.

And no, the textures cannot be extended to other areas.

Enjoy!   Wink
