Good morning,

I have a slight problem that occured twice yesterday while flying FSX. For some unexplained reason the video on my monitors went blank part way through one of the missions. I was not able to get past this blanking until I actually held in the power button for the 7 or 8 seconds it takes to turn the system off. Even trying the reset button would not restart the computer.

Yesterday I found that one of my EVGA GTX 285's was not working. It would give me intermittent garbled graphics while running FSX. I ran 3DMark06 and found that the card would crap out part way through the video test. Luckily for me my system has a second GTX 285 which I ran the same test on and it passed with no problem and there was no graphics glitch in FSX. But now the video has blanked out twice.

Could this be a problem with second video card or could it be a problem with FSX on my dedicated RAID0 HDD. I thought it might possibly be my power supply. It's a new system and the PS is a Corsair 1000 watts.

I'm sittng here scratching my head as to where to look or what to try next.

I have the Matrox TH2G  digital on one side of the video card running 3 -19" monitors and the other side having 1 - 19" monitor.

    Any ideas?

I am using the 182.5 driver. I'm using XP 64 Pro and the OS is on it's won separate HDD.

    Thanks in advance,

    Larry

Well, I guess I found the answer to my own question. Apparently, this blanking problem is happening with a lot of these EVGA GTX 285 FTW cards.

Had I know this before I bought, I would have used another card.

    Oh well, live and learn.

What else are you going to use?

The GTX 285 is the best FSX card out there

I dont know about this 'blanking' problem. I have 3 GTX 285s and have never seen one of them 'blank' out in-game

sounds to me like either you have 2 defects (rare), a defective PSU or something wrong with the install

The internet is loaded with bullshit too.. I dont see any common 'real' reports of a 285 blanking out anywhere

Hi Nick.

I was on the EVGA forum and there are different threads there that discuss the blanking problem on the GTX 285 FTW. It was suggested to me to downclock to the stock speed and that might fix my problem as that has helped others -  sometimes.  I downclocked the card last night and I didn't get the blanking that had happened to me the night before. Maybe it was a coincidence, who knows. I also updated to the latest driver which was the 186.18. Now mind you, I only was able to play one of the missons before I had to go to bed, but at least I didn't get the blanking.

You could be right, maybe I have 2 bad cards, possible - yes. I RMA ed the first defective card back today.

Maybe the power supply ???. Or, maybe I will have to do an FSX uninstall and a reinstall. Time will tell.

When I get the replacement back I will be running the 3Dmark06 on it immediately to confirm it's servicealility. In the meantime, I will do my missions and if I don't have any problems with the blanking I will then try to clock the card back to the original speed of 702MHz.

Any more of your thoughts are welcomed,

    Larry

PS. My video cards are the GTX 285 FTW.
