In my day if you wanted something you paid for it. Simple as that. Whether it was worth it or not didn't enter the equation. If you didn't have enough money then you saved up until you could afford it. Back in the "Swingin' Sixties" when a web was something spun by spiders a vinyl album cost something like 32 shillings & sixpence. That's about £1.62 in today's money. Imported albums could cost double that. I was earning £1 per day working 6 days a week including every weekend. There might be only one or two tracks on an album I was interested in but if I wanted it badly enough I saved up until I could afford it. All my mates did the same & having to wait gave us more pleasure when we finally got our grubby mitts on it. It never entered our heads to go & steal it from the record shop.

That's exactly what people are doing by downloading music illegally. It's common theft however you might try to justify it.

$20 of media, fined £2M

Would've been much less, but because they thought the person was lying they raised the fine from $9,250 per song in the first trial to $80,000.

Sometimes I think it is a bit excessive. I mean, think of all the other crimes and how little, in comparison, you can pretty much buy yourself out for. I could understand charging the cost of an album per song... But so much for so little. Seems harsh at times. Criminals seem to get away with a lot worse.

Technically it's a civil judgment and not a "fine", which may make a difference when she files for bankruptcy.

In America - probably.

In Canada - I've heard that file sharing is legal there.  The government has caved in to the RIAA and taxes every blank CD assuming that everyone is a criminal.

We could start a band and release an album with farts. We'll make millions with our 'talent'.....

Not sure where she downloaded her songs but a long time ago I had limewire, downloaded liike 10 songs. Then my computer crashed at both my mom and dads house. To this day I refuse to download any of that crap ever again because in my mind it screws up your computer.

Now I buy all my songs on iTunes even though I only have 50. Grin

Well, having Limewire may be legal. But filesharing copywrite media in Canada is illegal.

There's a lot of different ways of looking at this, but realistically, the punishment does not fit the crime.  Granted, laws were broken, the perp was caught, and I do believe in "If you can't do the time, don't do the crime, but $2mil is another kind of lawsuit level.   No one was hurt here, no lives were drastically altered.  I agree that the music industry has every right to protect its' copyrights, but they would be better off leveling small fines and going after more people, not just making a huge example of one person.

If someone gets a speeding ticket, they're out maybe $150-200 or whatever, 3 or more, your insurance goes way up, and of course, you could lose your license.  The music industry could work it like that.

Besides, where is she gonna get $2mil?  By realistically drilling for oil in her back yard?  By the way, why download, then upload again to Kazaa?  That kinda strikes me as leaving your name at the house you just broke into.

Limewire, the software = Legal.
The things you can get from it = GENERALLY illegal. Still some legal software/downloads you can get from Limewire, it depends on the license the software has and who uploads it. A lot of the stuff will be illegal though.

It is like asking if Google is illegal. Sure there are legal things you can get by using it, but then again there are illegal things you can gain by using it... Yet Google remains legal to use.
