Hi Folks,

Can anyone tell me how to re-start Alphasim's Sea King after a full shut-down?

I've tried the obvious thing of 'CTRL+E' (or, in my case, 'CTRL+P', for reasons lost to obscurity), with no success.  I've also tried every combination of button and control in the 2-D and Virtual Cockpits - nothing!  Cry

One of the reasons I bought the Sea King was because I'm keen on SAR missions.  I looked forward to doing timed 'scrambles' from cold, but this has proved impossible, so far.

BTW: I've been to Alphasim's site.  There is no forum, and when I hit the 'Support' button it turned out to be a dead link.  Huh

Hope someone can help!

This may be a redundant question, but are you bringing the collective lever into the full position before trying to start the aircraft?

Travis; by "full position" do you mean full UP collective (the fixed-wing equivalent of full-throttle)?

If so, the quick answer is, no.  I'm trying to start with the collective lever fully DOWN (throttle at idle in fixed-wing terms).

The only thing I can recommend is that you follow this link which will take you to the AlphaSim store where you can contact them with queries.

Didn't the Aircraft come with a Pilots Flight Manual (Kneeboard), or Aircraft Owners Manual, detailing all the Flight Procedures?

I would have thought it would be included in a Purchased version of the Aircraft.
(Even many freeware Aircraft include a Pilots/Aircraft Owners Manual).

If not, search, and download a Manual. You will need it to be able to carry out all the correct procedures!

How adept are you at editing panel.cfgs?

I was having the same issues with many other helicopters and found a "quick" solution. For some reason, it seems the sim doesn't start many helos like other aircraft. I found that turning on a fuel pump/fuel valve switch would activate the starters. (I Know, right! Roll Eyes ) The problem is, many helo panels don't have these switches. So, rather than read any directions (who needs 'em  Grin ) I just added the switch.

Here's what I did. Now I don't have the default Bell 206 panel installed any more, but if memory serves, if you open up the panel.cfg for the Bell 206 and look under the heading "[Window00]", listed somewhere in the gauge entries you should see one called something like "fuel valve"?

Stop here and check me up, If I'm wrong about the switch being used in the default 206, I may need to switch tactics.

Thanks for all the replies!

Some quick responses ...

Don't know how I missed that link to Alphasim. Guess that's what happens when you do this stuff in the wee small hours  Roll Eyes

Paul/Fozzer:
Purchased by direct download from Alphasim - no manual!

Yup; the 'fuel-valve' trick is how I normally start the JetRanger (and some other helo's) too.  But like I said, in the case of the Sea King, there IS no fuel-valve (at least, not one that actually works).

The default JetRanger panel.cfg contains this: gauge22=Bell_206B!Fuel Valve, 419, 251

Sounds like the right one ... so ... is it a matter of simply copying it over to the Sea King panel?  Did I say, "simply"?  Famous last words, eh?  Huh

Glad you got it sorted Andi...Wink...!

I find its often useful to search for a suitable Aircraft Owners Handbook (Notepad) on the Flight Sim Sites...

I even carefully study my Aircraft Owners Handbook for my little Sim Cessna 150/152's before each flight...(Trust me!...Wink...).... Smiley...!

...it sometime stops me from dying!... Shocked.... Grin...!

P.S....I didn't realise you were flying one of those annoying "Helicopter" Whirlygig thingies!... Grin... Grin... Grin...!

Yup, that's what I did.  Not the whole panel.cfg mind you, just add the gauge to the Seaking's panel.cfg. From there it's just a matter of moving it around the panel to the size and position you want it.

So, it's like this:

gaugexx
=Bell_206B!Fuel Valve,
XX
,
YY
,
WW
,
HH

gaugexx
Change the xx to the next gauge number of the window you're adding the gauge to.

XX
=the gauge's positon left to right on the panel. The higher the number, the farther right the gauge is placed.

YY
= The gauge's position top to bottom on the panel. The higher the number, the lower the gauge's position.

WW
= The gauge's width.

HH
= The gauge's height.

Easy, no? Wink

The end result may not be visually accurate to the real thing, but at least you can start it now!

STOP PRESS  STOP PRESS  STOP PRESS

Just heard from Phil at Alphasim.  He said, and I quote: "Use shift-F4, that's the normal way to start helis in FS." Unquote.

Well, that's news to me.  Using 'Shift+F4' on MY toy-box increases the engine revs to the point where you can lift off.  Anyway, that's what the man said ... it doesn't work ... but that's what Alphasim will tell you if you ask.  Roll Eyes

So, looks like it's back to the panel.cfg trick.  I'll let you know how I get on, Mr GB1  Wink

Now then, Mr Fozzer, whaddaya mean,  "annoying "Helicopter" Whirlygig thingies!"?  That's it!  This means hand-bags at dawn!!   Wink Grin

HOLD THE FRONT PAGE!!!!

Anyone following this post, please be patient and read on.  I guarantee you'll be surprised!

Late last night (actually, more like early this morning) I exchanged a frustrating series of emails with Phil at Alphasim.  Basically, he kept telling me that SHIFT+F4 would re-start any turbine helicopter, and I kept replying that it didn't start the Sea King.

According to Phil, SHIFT+F4 = Mixture to Full, and, quote: "that's what starts heli's, and if yours doesn't, then you must have a non-standard set-up".  I told him my FS set-up was completely unaltered, but I don't think he believed me.

Eventually I did the sensible thing and checked my settings within FS.  This is what I found:-

SHIFT+F4 = Reheat/Afterburner on/off

CTRL+SHIFT+F4 = Mixture Rich (presumably what Phil meant by "Mixture to full").

Well, I loaded the Sea King, shut down the engines, then tried CTRL+SHIFT+F4 .... and those puppies fired up first time, no problems (they seemed to achieve full revs a tad quickly for my taste, but at least they started, so that's a bonus).  I then tried Owen Hewitt's Jet Ranger - yup - re-started that as well.   Smiley

So, there's the answer, folks.  If you need to re-start a turbine heli' in FS9, and you don't have a working fuel-valve, try CTRL+SHIFT+F4 ... just as long as this combination will apply 'Mixture Rich' on your control settings.  That's a new one on me, and just goes to show that FS is a bit like life ... just when you think you know all about it, you learn something new  Huh

Later, I got another email from Phil, admitting he got it wrong and that the 'standard' combination for 'Mixture Rich' is indeed, CTRL+SHIFT+F4.  I couldn't take much satisfaction from that, as I'd made mistakes in my messages to him as well.  The main thing is, at the end of the night we both went off to bed, happy little bunnies ... er ... SEPARATELY, I mean!   Embarrassed   Roll Eyes

Well, this means I don't have to mess around with the panel.cfg anymore.  Just as well, as I'd probably screw that up as well (what is it with me and sexual innuendo today???  Cheesy )

Big 'Thank You' and 'Happy Landings' to everyone who contributed to this one.

Special Message to Mr Paul Fozzer

Hmmmm .... but dangle those same neighbours precariously from a mountain ledge; abandon them in a lifeboat on a storm-tossed sea; or - Heaven forfend - have them involved in a serious accident or medical emergency, and guess what they'd be praying to hear come 'whop-whopping' over the horizon to save their collective Aspidistra???
... Here's a clue: it wouldn't be a little Cessna 152  Roll Eyes   Wink

Here endeth the lesson, boys and girls ... and never forget ... 'To fly is Heavenly, but to Hover is Divine' - and my personal favourite, 'Happiness is a Big Chopper' (no smutty remarks, please  Shocked )
