I've done it myself, but others have said, it's a little disappointing to put a lot of time and effort into an edit, and have it get stomped by a composite that took all of 5 minutes to assemble, and no effort on the artists part to make the cutout.

And the folks at SSW don't appreciate their work being used without credit being given to the person who put so much effort into cutting the airplane out. Wink

It's their work, and their effort, we must respect that. Cool

Sure, I can understand the part about using a cutout and slapping it on a background image in just a minute or 2. But then there are those that still take alot of time to edit the shot even more. Adjusting all sorts of things to make it look as if the cutout was part of the background to begin with. That is the challenge. My Apache shot definitely did not look the way it is now when I started it.

I can also understand about putting alot of time in a standard edit, and it getting overtaken by a composite. Of all my shots, the edit of the snake Airbus at Gatwick took loads of time, yet it didnt get all that noticed as far as nominations go. Which is fine by me, thats not a concern.

You are preaching to the choir on this one. Wink  I know what a pain it can be to get them right.

The big thing here is that we are not giving SSW members the credit for their work.

80% of the work in a composite is in doing the cut out. The rest is getting it to look like it belongs there.

If cut outs were so easy to do, SSW wouldn't have them as downloads. Wink

I'm not saying you can't use them at all, we just need to start giving credit for them. Wink

Background images are fine, it's the plane cut outs we're talking about. Wink

I like the polygon lasso tool. Does basically the same thing though. Once i learned how to do it... I've been doing all my own cutouts anyways.

The pen tool is like the polygon lassoo, but you can undo points that you don't like and redo them, unlike with the lassoo where you have to start all over again Wink

Hi,

I can see where you are coming from with this and I have to say I think you are right to limit their usage.

We maintain this section of downloads as it's a good way to help people get started, the learning curve can be pretty steep at times. I will be honest and say I never considered the knock on effect they could have on other sites who have competitions and nominations.

I will give it some thought and see if there is a way we can help from our end.

As for the Lasso V Pen tool -  I would use the pen tool everytime. The Lasso latches itself to the pixels and follows their line, this is ok until you get Jaggies! then it simply follows them. The Pen tool just follows the line you ask it to, so it's much smoother and gives a higher quality of cut. When making the created path into a selection enter a value of 0.5 into the box for feather and your cuts will be really good.

Shane - If we can help in anyway just contact me.

John
