i have not custom built a PC in yrs. i have been running my system with happy results for almost 5 yrs.  Grin

But it is time to up grade, and i will be honest. I have no idea anymore as to what i am doing.

When i built mine, there was no DDR2 mem, unless it was on a video Card. and SLi was still very new and 512mb on a card was the best you could get.

And as for DXT10,  lol that was no where to even be seen. it was only a rumor.

but i have been flying flight sime from the flight sim 98 Days.  lol o how we all thought that that was amazing graphics then.  Grin

my questions are simple.

Yes i will be going DX10.
Money is not that big of a deal, but i would like to stay under $10,000.

I want to know if Vista unlimited is worth it.
Im thinking i should go Intel, but i have no idea witch of there new chips are good for gaming, and work best with what mother boards.

Is DDR3 worth it? or stick with DDR2? witch ones are the hot brands?
you know how you see good names for cheep......    do you still get what you pay for? or has the price gone down for real?

i would like to stay with Nvidea, but again with there new stuff i have no idea witch one is best for running FSX. i do also run active sky, FEX, GEX, and would love to add more upgrades. i wish to add lots of AI, ground traffic and ground details. at the moment i cant do much with light bloom.

I do not really play anything else but FSX. i do listen to music and browse the web. but i know that stuff will work on anything.

i will say with what i have now, it runs great and looks good. i have no real complaints. i just know that its getting time for DX10, and some better mem. plus, i want lintel. AMD is no longer the best thing for gaming.

i do hope this is all the info that you need. let me know please if you need more. i thank you all for your help. its hard for me to admit that i dont know much about upgrading anymore.

thank you very much for the help.

cheers to all,
Dan  Smiley

Read the big windows tweak thread by NickN.  It is a sticky at the entrance of the Flight Sim FSX forum.  Read it carefully and follow it when you set up your new rig...Whatever that new rig might be.  It has some very good hardware advice in it as well, so I recommend reading it afore you go shopping for parts.

And DirectX 10 is a joke.  Not fully implemented in FSX and I cant tell you what it is good for except some of the first-person shooters out there...
