Have REX now.  Do I start FSX thru the REX function for the weather and effects to work?

I wouldn't. You have to select the textures you want to load into FS. If you use the REX weather engine, it will take a while, but it will automatically select the textures that fit the weather you are flying in (i.e. if you will be flying in a thunderstorm, REX will load big cumulonimbus (sp?) clouds into FSX...)

Honestly, I got sick of the wait, so I started the REX weather engine, manually selected a set of textures that I liked, and then I just start FSX the usual way. That way, whenever I fly, I always have a set of textures I like.  Smiley

Ferrari, you know that is why we have an OPTIONS MANAGER, to allow the user to select which textures to install. The water takes the longest to load, for good reason. If you don't like the load times, just DESELECT the water options in the REX OPTIONS screen, and the load time will be approx 45 seconds to 1 minute.

Cheers!

I have been considering REX for the real world weather. Active sky X crashes FSX too much, and the default weather downloader doesn't work

I'm actually considering purchasing REX now. A while ago, it was either REX, or FEX. These past 2 days, FEX seems to have disappeared off the face of the earth. The website isn't running (well, not on my pc), and I can't connect to their server everytime I open it. Progress reports on the new features for FEX are few and far between. To me, it looks like it's not going anywhere  Sad Shame really, as the textures it provides are great, but it seems REX is the greater product of the 2

Hey guys,

I am using ASA and REX. I have turned off the REX autmated WX function. My question is the following: Do I have to have REX running whenever I fly the sim, or are the textures already replaced in the main FSX folder?

With ASA I know you need to have it up and running, I was not sure about REX when I am not using the weather generator or flight planner.

Thanks!

I don't know myself, but I recommend you try the dedicated REX support forum here:

its just textures.. the interface sends textures to FSX by your selection and execution..  so if you have already done that the interface does not need to be open

I made sure it was all configured right after the install, I guess it just put the textures over really fast.

You can make different theme selections from the REX interface.. then you choose to send those selections to FSX from the interface.

I posted on the REX forum asking, It does appear you have to load the textures you want before flying, I will let you guys know what they come back with.

ASA is pretty amazing though! I just want the better looking clouds/water  Grin

you have to manually select what you want prior to sim launch. It does not change on the fly

I got that part, but I was wondering if you only needed to load the textures once and then it will automatically load them each time.

Also, I read to do this:

http://realenvironmentxtreme.com/forum/index.php?topic=670.0

Do you see any problems with doing this Nick?

p.s. why cant the developers make this as easy as GEX

thats up to you..

There is no such thing as a free lunch. 4096 comes with its pain and its delight

I would say leave the setting at default 1024 until the sim is correctly tuned. Also, I would not install any of the 4096 textures till the sim is correctly tuned. That way, when you do install/apply.. you will know if the change brings on issues that may not work for you in a busy hub under heavy weather conditions.

You being a big tube airliner fan.. anything like that in eye candy comes with a cost when the plane is sucking up the gravy
