I have a couple of the freeware ones from the download page here, and they're ok (although I have various VC issues with them...some windows blacked out, etc.), but I'm not getting quite the feel of the actual plane that I'd like.  Anybody have a suggestion?

Best freeware version I've found is sabrejet.zip, believe from SimOuthouse.  The VC may not meet your requirements nor does it have a USAF livery.  As for handling - never having flown one, I don't know but it feels good to me.

The third and last files on this page.
There are also a ton of great repaints here for it as well.

The section8 Sabre is THE finest sabre available anywhere. And it's free!!

For FSX it just needs the alpha flipped for the VC glass. Wink

Agreed on the SectionF8. It is truly payware quality for free!  Smiley

SectionF8 Sabre is the best way to go. I'd say it's better than many payware aircraft! It is for FS9, but SectionF8's website has an update for FSX users so that the VC works flawlessly.

Also keep in mind, they are working on a native FSX version as we speak!

My specs... A hard drive, motherboard, graphics card, some memory, a keyboard, mouse, and monitor - in other words, nothing special.

Kirk Olsson F-86 modified bu Nor-Cal Prop Club.
The original FSX Kirk Olsson models do not have a VC which runs well on FSX Accel. Get the modified version. I did!

I don't wish to be too controversial, but I prefer Kirk Olsson's sabre to the Section8 one Wink
