This is driving me nuts.

I just plugged in a card reader to get some data off a SD card.  In the past the icon for STOPPING the darn card was ALWAYS on the task bar with the other icons near the clock.

Well..... it is NOT THERE now.  ASnd I can't for the LIFE of me remember how to get it back showing there so that I cna shut it down so that I can remove the card reader.

Can anyone help me out here.  Getting old and cant remember stuff.   Roll Eyes

best,

....................john

The reason to stop it is that if you take it out with something copying, cutting, etc. it can cause file corruption. So most of the time he can just take it out, but then there is always the chance of corruption.

If your worried about it too much then just shut down your PC before you take it out, then turn your PC back on.

Hmm and it seems sorry for the late reply  Cheesy.

Thanks for the "Shut down" idea.  That was how I was addressing it.

However I can't figure out WHY the little usb icon that is normally on the taskbar to show such devices attached suddenly disappeared on me.  And I can'tremember WHERE in Win XP you go to find the "show on taskbar" little checkbox to try to get it back.  I KNOW that I have used that box before in setting things up.  But I just can't remember WHERE it is.

i dont know if it would help, but you could try looking under  START > RUN > MSCONFIG > START UP    ... this is what tells the computer to start what programs when you start the computer.  it might have gotten unchecked by accident.

If that is not it.. if you restart the computer and then plug it back in, and it recognizes and it shows up, there might be something in its properties if you right click on it.

edit: if you are scared of loosing information / file corruption and turning off / shutting off the card reader.... why not when you are done moving / copying / deleting files from the card just simply remove the card and leave the reader running?

That would be exactly the same as just unplugging the card reader.
