If I posted all the info and answered every question answered about my (or should I say your custom plane because you built it) plane would some one build it? I could put in diagrams or something if you wanted me to?
I would not make it a hard plane. All I'm looking for is the outside no VC or anything like that, that can come later. It would also be a fairly easy shape... a cylindrical body with a cone shaped nose (Yes kind of like a concorde but with a larger diameter). One other thing is don't protect it because I will be putting in a VC and a interior.
Thanks

no the vc is part of the model file and the model file can only be edited by the designer, and the (protecting) is not done by the designer

A VERY qualified yes.
Presuming you're modelling for FS-X and using the FS-X SDK (and not adapting a model made for FS2004 with the FS2004 SDK tools), then "yes" you could, conceivably, take a VC "interior" model from an existing plane and copy it to your model's folder.
HOwever, it opens up another can of worms.
Some modellers protect their interior "VC" models, so you can't use it apart from the model it was made for.
Gauges, and other animated bits and pieces, may - and probably won't - work apart from their intended model/airplane hierarchy.
Basically, you're almost better off creating your own VC. Remember that the FS-X interior models also bring with them any bits and pieces of the exterior model that you would "see" from the cockpit.
If I were to create an ultralight model with an enclosed cockpit - "normal" control surfaces, and decided to use the interior model from the default Air Creation trike .... I would "see" the Air Creation glorified hang glider from the VC, not my own model.

I see what you mean with that...
example: if i put a small airplane VC in my jet I would see a propeller from inside the VC but not out side...

VC (interior model) swapping between two, TRUE FSX models is technically possible..
Aside from what Felix mentioned.. there is the problem of reference point too. Like.. the Lear VC will work in the 737.. but if you pulled up to something (like a hold-short line) from a VC reference.. you could switch to exterior view and see 1/2 the 737 out on the runway ..lol
Considereing that it has to be two FSX native models.. and that almost all FSX native models HAVE a VC.. it's like a potential solution to a problem that does not exist..
One thing I'm gonna try though.. is to make the default Dash-8 flyable.. and use the VC from my Saab 340.. Aside from having to see the word "Saab" in the cockpit.. THAT should be a workable match..

And one other thing... how far do I scale it down from real size?
I don't want to finish something, import it and realise the wheel is as big as the runway...

First - WHAT modelling program are you using?
Before you start on any of the detail questions - you NEED to have some familiarity with the program itself, and do the program's own basic tutorials.... this assumes that you do not have 3D Modelling experience!

Where to start??? Google man!!! Or better, Flight sim comes with GMax. Load it to your hard drive and start working through those tutorial files under the help directory. They are not about aircraft, but first you need the basics. Then you can follow the instructions in those tutorials but sub in your starter project instead. Eventuall build up the aircraft project. One important thing to remember is to set the right scale in gmax. One unit equals one meter. Everything is done in meters. Use the real measurements converted to meters. If you are designing your own aircraft, make drawing and scale things off of those. Do everything to actual size.
Have fun.

I agree on this, I knew it since I saw this post the first time
and BTW ,My dear friend Shadow .
VC is always much more difficult than the exterior model
and yes, to give you a response we have to know what modeling software are you using.

I started planning all the dimensions for my plane in meters, and another question popped into my head. . .
Are windows done in the model itself or while painting

You're asking all the little questions. Start working with the modeling program a bit, and then come back and ask questions like that.
But to answer a couple of your queries:
You don't need to rescale anything. The modeling program will scale things for you. It programs itself in either meters or feet and you decide how big you want it to be in the sim, and make it that big in the modeling program.
The SDK is NOT a modeling program. It just contains usefull info and resources, plus a couple of tools necessary to make a model. Gmax is a modeling program, and the only free one available for direct conversion to FS.
Windows are at your discretion. Some people opt to model the windows directly into the 3D model. Others make them using a painting system. Generally, the AI specific aircraft will have them painted on, while the flyable aircraft will have them built in. This is not a rule, however. The smaller aircraft (Cessnas and the like) are always modeled with the windows. Most jetliners, or anything larger than a business jet, can be made with the windows not modeled in. It's truly at the designer's discretion.
Now: GO GET TUTORIALS! COME BACK WHEN YOU'VE READ THEM!

Ok... this is the last for a while... should I build a bigger less complicated jet first or a smaller more complicated prop plane?
P.S. the prop plane would use these engines:

Ok I will, FSX is finally in stock, so I will be picking it up in a day or two. Anything else that may be useful to me?
(other than Gmax)
And should I download Gmax and start work on the prop set now or wait a few days until I get FSX

Shaddow, don’t worry if it is a big or small aircraft. Some small aircraft can be as complex as a big one. My aircraft for example only has a 14 foot wingspan yet has very complex gear, flaps, spoilers, reverse-thrust, etc. A big cargo jet has no cabin windows so it’s fuselage may actually be simple. A big fuselage is just scaled up but has the same shape and complexity.
Get the program at
http://www.turbosquid.com
and later when you get the flight sim modified version, you can upgrade.
Start working through the tutorials doing the exercises, yet all the while trying to relate how each sample thing the tutorials has you build could be applied to modeling an aircraft part. A flag pole could be a pitot tube, or a static wick for instance. A spiral stair case could be flattened and changed into a turbine stage. Get the idea? When the tutorial has you “cut” a section out of a cylinder, that could be a canopy out of a fuselage.
Start making an inventory of the small simple parts and as you learn more about modeling, make the next item. You will have many many parts by the time you are done.
Also, try to keep the vertex count low initially. You can always add detail later. 12 or 16 sided wheels instead of 36 sides for example.
Google for answers first, post questions when you are really stuck. Even then, sometimes an important point may be missed no matter how many people answer your question, such as when my VC was stuck for a half a year for a simple thing like the illegal 16 letter file name I had for my Planar BMP while it should have been a max of 15!
So modeling any aircraft may also have you pulling your hair out, but it still is a great feeling of accomplishment.

Gmax is a paired down version of 3D Max. 3D Max is one of the major programs used in the film and animation industry, with top of the line render engines, tools, effect, etc. Gmax is the “light” version. There are also game specific light versions optimized for various games of which Flight Sim is one. So for example, there is no render engine since you can look at your results within the game – that is the reasoning. So you design in Gmax, compile your aircraft or what ever you are making with Makemodel, and see it within Flight Sim. So the flight sim Soft wear Development Kit (the SDK) has the version optimized for MS Flight Sim. Or at least that is my understanding of it.

Ok... Your probably wondering when the questions are going to stop...
This one has nothing to do with my plane though...
Is fire included with the smoke or only on specific planes???
I would like to know how to make (Fake) engine fires...
Yay FSX is getting here either monday or tuesday!!!
But I can't get it installed until he gets back (2 weeks from Sunday)
Hopefully he will install it the first or second day after getting back.

Shadow, my first piece of advice would be this...
Patience
Learning how to do this well takes a lot of time & effort. Answers might not always appear as fast as you would like, and sometimes they might not appear at all... leaving you to answer the question for yourself. It's not as tough now as it was when I was getting started, as many questions I had a long time ago have been answered many times over.
I would suggest that you work through the included tutorials before starting a plane. I would also strongly advise getting a copy of the "Gmax Bible" which has been very useful to me. Then select a reasonable first project. I would suggest a single engine GA design that has a basic instrument panel. It would help you if you can find something you really like as that will make it easier to keep going.
I would also strongly suggest that you broaden your horizons. There are many good sites out there that are devoted to developing. Here are a couple of good ones...
http://www.aerodynamika.com/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.cgi
http://www.fsdeveloper.com/forum/index.php
As to your questions about flaming engines...fire & smoke are accomplished by use of effects. You will not get to using those for awhile. The windows should be modeled
Good Luck on your future modeling. I look forward to watching your journey
Remember...This is Fun!

Hey Shadow,
I have to agree with N2056.
You can use textures to get away with certain things like rivets, vents and such but when it comes to highly visible items like windows, it's probably best to go the distance.
At the end of the day you have to decide what works for you and how much effort you're prepared to put into your designs

Stratobat

also, this depends on the kind of aircraft you're making... if it's a small GA plane like a cessna or piper, where the windows take up a big portion of the aircraft's surface area, it's probably best that they're modeled, even because if you paint them on, you won't be able to see through them, will you? it would be like a decal of a window on a toy airplane (although there are ways to make transparent holes on your textures, but let's not get ahead of ourselves)
now, if you're modeling a large commercial jet, that has lots of really small windows, painting them on is not such a bad idea, since if you were to model them, you'd have to go through a whole lot of work for a relatively small reward... the front windshields, however are a different story, they're a lot larger and probably worth modeling
Hope this helps
Cheers

It will have around the same amount of windows as a L 1011... (Not really sure how many that has but is is similar size to that, with around the same amount of passengers)...

ahh so it is a commercial jet!
then your best bet would be to paint the side windows on the fuselage texture, and only worry about modeling the windshields and the cockpit within
ah, and is your plane, per chance, a DC-10 or MD-11?

Actually yes, (In a sense).
I'm building (or will be on Saturday) an MD - 90 but with the proposed engines (which where the GE 36 Unducted fans). The only other thing is custom wings and stabilizers (I don't think I've seen a passenger aircraft with swept forward wings and a V-tail).
I'll keep you posted on how it goes... (when I start)

I have also found a "shoot down effect"/"shot down" and would like to know if it could be "copied" onto another plane with out hours of work?
theoretically, yes, it would require a good understanding of how .fx files work and how to add the appropriate entries to your aircraft config file.
but once again we're getting ahead of ourselves here... your aircraft doesn't even have it's own config file as of yet, so i'd worry about the essentials first...
Cheers

What CD thing? You mean an installation disk for the software? If you go to the manufacturer's site, they should have a download for the software on there. Most do.

Ok I've been playing around with FSX for a while and I think I'm going to download Gmax soon so that I can start...
Any suggestions of things that you would like to see in the plane?

Jezz! ,Neither I or any other designer said this, You must be real good
YES ..I would like to see ,any object in FSX,I would like you to export it a table a box anything as post a
shot
here , YOU DON'T NEED NOTHING NO MD 11 TECHNOLOGY from now, you need to learn how to make things work in FSX or FS9 ,if you open gmax you can make any object even my little 8 years old cousin does planes Model is a very simple thing to do , applying textures ,ANIMATIONS is not easy ,WE would like to see what have you learn
There's no tutorial for this ,if there is one It would be a tutorial as the size of a Bible book ,Neither FSX-SDK (fsxsdk.chm) Will help you ,For real Help you need to Be in the first place A humble person ,I do have learn a little by asking in Freeflight design Shop Thru all these Years , I still ask because I'm still a learner , People as Bill Leaming ,Chuck Jodry ,Bill Lions , Milton Shupe and even from N2056 the same one who told you here to be
Patience
, Those where /are my books ,my teachers and I'm very thanksfull to these guys, without these person I would never made anything Because even in Makemdl9 This is very hard ,there are many Variants , many details , and this is not a joke ..
Edited:
EDIT: I just check out your profile,I think I made a terrible mistake, I do understand you now,
your 12 years old
,I though you were Older About my age (44),and Is GOOD at such of young age want to learn , I'm willing to help you ,and I'm sure as many others, but calm down my friend..Open your Gmax and do one of the first most difficult thing you will find ,EXPORTING AS MDL try to export as I already said a Box from gmax and save it in a download it aircraft and rename with the same name this x plane has
(Do Not touch the default airplanes)
Let see if you have well set the Gmax (FSX_GMax) Properly first of all

Shadow, i would have to agree with Alrot on this one... you need to worry about the basics of basic first before you can even think about what you're going to offer as a final release
you have to understand that FS aircraft are projects that take MONTHS if not YEARS in development... and require utmost devotion, patience and commitment
but most important of all, you have to be humble... it took me years to get my first project ready... and i can safely say that even after that time, i still don't know everything... and, like everyone else, i'm still learning
the one thing you have to keep in mind is:
Don't assume you are good.
let me explain... it is a good thing to be confident, but too much confidence will make you pretentious, and a pretentious person can never learn
having said that, here's what i think you should do:
first, model a box. yes, a box... a simple 1x1x1 segmented box, with no textures
then try and see if you can export this box model into FS
if you succeed with the box, you'll know that from that box model, you can turn it into anything you want
but keep exporting upon every minor change, so you'll know what was the last thing you did if it starts not wanting to export
i had to learn this the hard way... there is a proper way of modeling if you want your model to export nicely, and making the entire model in Gmax before you ever attempt to export it is a huge mistake and can only lead to an interminable list of compiler errors that you will be very lucky if you can remove half of them
i don't mean to offend, or to bring unnecessary difficulties to your project... i'm just trying to point you in the right direction... you seem committed to your idea, and that's a nice first step, but you gotta master the basics before you go on to more advanced things
Cheers dude

Ok ya I get what you both mean (I guess I'm kind of anxious to start...). The only thing that is bugging me is: If I make the cube thing, without textures, wont it be invisible?
I like what you did with the screen shot lol

I didn't do anything with the screenshot I exported as MDL object and put it in the b727 model ,This is a real shot ,no tricks
Neither these ones
http://www.simviation.com/cgi-bin/yabb2/YaBB.pl?num=1235316446
you already response yourself ,These letter doesn't have textures at all just the color of gmax ,but you need to have instaled FSX-Sp2 otherwise they would become not invisible ,they would become black if your aren't using sp2

What Gold edition?
I far I concern there are two FSX Deluxe and standard ,and standard does not have FSX-SDK ,so if you have a version with SDK included is Deluxe..
Or maybe I miss something here
