Hello, gang.  I am interested in trying my hand at repaints, and have read quite a bit here (that is well over my head for now) but I have a basic question.  I am doing a bit of exploration by deconstructing existing repaints using DXTBMP and Photo Pos Pro. Using DXTBMP I wave the file as a 24 bit BMP then export the alpha.

I can modify the alpha and import back with no issues, but if I modify the the basic BMP file the trouble begins. Once I make a change and import the alpha, when I select "save" it defaults to DTX1 (No Alpha) and the channel is not saved with the file.  Even if I select a different DTX, the result is the same: an image with no alpha channel data.

Any thoughts?

DTX1 does not support an alphachannel, but DTX3 does, so saving it as an DTX3, or as I do, an extended 32 bit BMP, will give you an alpha channel.
Use save as>extended bitmap> select whatever it is you want.

Hope this helps,

If you add the alpha in DXTBMP there should be no problem as long as the saved choice supports it

Turning a file back from DXT3  to 24 then re compressing it to DXT3 is not a sound idea as the quality will suffer

As the turning back from DXT3 to 24 bit has already lost detail, it would be better to resave as Extended 32 888-8. and that will hold the quality as it is.

Appreciate the tip... in actuality, I am struggling with "noise" pixels just in saving my work in .bmp format in the editing application.  I'll keep the 888-8 format in mind when I get serious.

I smell a new hobby here...
