Got a fast plane and want an interesting way to use it?

I am proposing a race, JFK to LAX. Any plane you wish real or fictional.
You are responsible for your route.

I only suggest one very important rule to keep it interesting and fair:

No unlimited fuel. This would mean some fast fighters could hold their own against the likes of the SR-71,X-15. and XB-70. Wink Fuel effeciency will be just as important as overall speed.
Fuel stops will be allowed if you need them. A lot of aircraft won't need to refuel at all.

Determining winner can be done in a couple of ways.

A. We can do it Cannonball run style, where best time wins.
                               OR
B.Everyone take off, get to a predetermined altitude and location and first one there wins. (I think this way would be more fun!)

The event would be held on a Saturday so as many people as possible can make it. Time of day will be determined to make it easier for people of all time zones to participate.

Please let me know if you're interested. I have completed this trip myself in under an hour in several aircraft, so it shouldn't take too long.
Hope to see some participation on this one to give the old simviation server a workout! Wink

Chicago to Los Angeles following Route 66 takes would take long enough on my Super-Bike... Shocked...

Doing the similar route in my trusty Cessna 150 Aerobat form JFK to KLAX. will take much too long, I'm afraid... Cry...!

The flight from KSFO to KLAX following Highway 5, or Highway 101, is plenty long enough for me to be sat in my Trusty Beech Baron!... Grin...!

I had thought about the time shift thing and slew also. But I have done this route in just about every fast plane out there, So I am fairly certain I know what the minimum time to complete is. Also I could have my laptop running with the server's GPS map up to make sure. Wink
It would be obvious if someone was just cruising along the map while the rest of us were still a couple of states behind. Cheesy

The whole point of this is just to have some fun. I think a prop based race would be kinda neat too. Each weekend start a new state, award points formula 1 style. Just looking for ways to utilize this awsome server we have here. Wink  It is so nice to be able to fly online without the fear of being booted off suddenly. Smiley

Last night I did find an aircraft that completed this trip in 15minutes! Shocked Shocked No joke! So the whole fictional aircraft thing might have to be rethought. Grin

So with at least 1 vote of enthusiasm, I can have hope that we can pull this off. It would be great to have a bunch of us from the forums flying together having some fun with something we all share in common and enjoy so much. Cool

How did that become 5 minutes?
No it was the futurama spacecraft. 99,999ft at full speed! It said the trip would take 35minutes but my timepiece said differently.
Just tried it online again with the MIG-25, took three fuel stops. That thing is a gas hog! The hummer of the skies! Grin

Great to see the interest in this. Smiley I am open to what times are best for everyone. Saturday or Sunday would probably be best, but I wouldn't be against a weekday. Personally I'm available for this at any time of the day or night. I imagine a little later would be best for those in each hemisphere.
So for those interested so far, if you could post what you feel is a good time for you, we can start to get this thing a little more organized and ready to fly. Wink

Saturdays work best for me, with any time range being available unless it is very late in the evening.
I'm in the US Eastern Timezone.
Tuesday evenings may also work, but that depends on what is going on as far as homework goes for my college classes during that specific week.

Beyond that, I'm sure many of us will be free in the days around Thanksgiving and/or Christmas, so you may want to consider that as well.
Wink

Finally, I would really focus on specifying the aircraft requirements, since this could be really lopsided depending on what people find and use.
You may also want to establish weather standards as well.

A lot of us in the eastern time zone! That's going to make things a little easier. Now to just get something in line with our UK buddies. I was thinking of a time somewhere between 5pm-8pm, I don't want to go past 8pm if I don't have to, that way I won't miss out on a1's tours if we do this on a Saturday.

Are you bringing a rocket powered Cessna Waspi? Grin

I think a prop and/or turboprop version would be great, but you would probably need to break the trip up into segments. (such as, fly from A to B on this weekend, then B to C on the next weekend, and so on. Maybe make each trip 200 or 300 miles.)

I'm afraid that if it is in the form of a speed contest/Cannonball Run, then obviously the Pilot with the fastest Aeroplane is most likely to win!... Shocked...

...my usual, Touring, General Aviation, Piston Props would never stand a chance!... Cry...!

There would have to be another way of arranging the flight(s) into separate groups/types of aircraft?

It would have to be a short, 1 to 2 Hours duration, Hop from A to B each Weekend to complete the journey.

From past experience, I find that most Sim Pilots get bored after a short while, and either leave to watch the Dreaded Football, etc, on the 'Tele, or fool about, and annoy others with various Aerobatic, etc, stunts, (and then go off to watch the Dreaded Football, etc, on the 'Tele).... Angry...!

The usual type of our pre-arranged, shortish, Weekend Tours, from A to B, over the total distance, works very well, and suits most enthusiastic Multiplayer Simmers... Smiley...!

...so...there you go...

Either a Race, from start to finish?...
...or a Tour from Start to Finish?... Roll Eyes...

I had thought about that, and that's where the fuel consumption was hopefully going to come into play. That, and for the cross country trip, I kinda figured that only around 5-7 types were gonna show up anyway, I've done this route in what I feel are the fastest available aircraft, and all are within a few knots of eachother in terms of speed, but some drink the petrol alot quicker than others. After all, there is only so fast that you can go in the sim. Once this terminal speed is reached, it's all down to route and fuel consumption. That I feel is where the real challenge will lie!
For the shorter prop-based hops, I like esselbachs idea about limiting  aircraft to a certain time period. That would keep things close, as would navigation. Make them mountain valley runs keeping under certain altitudes with time penaltys! There are plenty of various racing props out there, most designed to originally compete with eachother.

But now it's trying to evolve into something serious, I was just looking for something fast and fun with the cross country trip, and since it can be done in under an hour, I figured it would work.
It would really take an extreme amount of dedication and organization to do the slower prop runs, while I think it would be great fun, and something to fill the awful gap left by racing's off season, I agree with you that interest would probably wane rather quickly.
In the end, I guess I'll just keep flying online hoping to see others jump on and join in the fun. Wink

...I like your enthusiasm for our Sim V Multiplayer activities, Shane!...Wink...!

...see what you can come up with...Wink...!

It often involves a lot of very careful, pre-planning, as proved by our regular, expert, very successful, Multiplayer organisers!

Out of all the various other Multiplayer Sites I daily visit, Sim V is one of the the most popular Servers, and mostly guaranteed to come across a similar enthusiast at most times of the day!

So, there you go...

If it looks interesting, and is manageable, on both sides of the Pond, at times to suit both, (and not conflict with existing events), then it is always good-to-go, and keeps Sam's Server alive!...Wink...!

This is the only one I've used (not counting the bad experience on gamespy with FSX)
I really like the simplicity of the way things work here for the online activities, just a couple of clicks away from happiness. Wink No need to run a dozen other programs to get flying.(not that it may be that way at other sites) I guess I just like the familiarity of having the SimV enviroment online. Smiley

Sounds like a blast, but there are some handicaps as mentioned before...everyone would just figure out what plane is fastest and fuel efficient and fly it open throttle...maybe if you designate a bird it would level off the competition a bit, such as a high speed prop (example, Hughes 500, who has the perfect prop pitch/mixture to run the bird at max efficiency?)

Just my two cents, I'll check back and if it looks like a fair fight I'm in!!

That can be done in MSFS?! Shocked I was not aware of that! Sure, if you tell me how to do it! Grin

As an update: it will probably be best to post what aircraft you're gonna use, and use something freeware, that way there are none of the conflicts while in multi. I would hate to watch a mach3 Cessna kicking my butt all the way across the country. Grin
                          OR.....
A suggestion has been made to limit to some specific types since those will probably be the ones showing up anyway.

These planes here achieve the max speed but differ on fuel consumption. I have tested each on a couple of different routes and they all are within a few minutes of each other in travel time.
Altitude seems to play a big factor in speed, fuel useage, and travel time. So this should work nicely if everyone is up to using just these.

All are available here.
1.SR-71(alpha freeware with Chicilo update)
2.XB-70(with the update)
3.X-15
4.Mig-31 Firefox(with the latest update)

There may be others so don't hold this as a 'this or nothing' type of list.
Just remember that everyone has to be able to get it for free to make it fair and fun for all. Wink

The one I listed is the Clint Eastwood movie one, for some reason it's listed as the Mig-31 so I included that part of the title just in case. Wink I would be disappointed if that didn't show up! Grin

It's looking like this Saturday around 18:00-19:00 GMT+0 for a start time, that should be early enough for the UK folks and prime time for the US folks and shouldn't conflict with anyone planning to participate in a1's Swiss tour. I'll give this post a couple of days to gather opinions on the start time and then post an official thread for it on Wed. this week.

The real Mig-31 is called the foxhound and is a close twin to the Mig-25 Foxbat for those that wondered. Wink

Cool. AAR can be done in MSFS, but you need a third party app for it. The only one I can think of is Abacus' Arrestor Cables. So it's probably an unfair advantage.
