Just ordered a new Core i7 system, ATA before Christmas (I hope).

I hope to receive a water cooled Core i7 system with the specs as mentioned below in a fee weeks time, if there are no reviews on the net by that time of a Core i7 running FSX, I will tell you good people out there how my new system runs FSX.
As I am only a software engineer, the computer hardware will be custom build by a Dutch computer shop who know their way around water cooled systems, so when it arrives I only have to do the fun parts like install the OS and FSX and away I fly.

Any predictions to what this system can do for FSX?

Memory 12GB: 2x OCZ OCZ3G1600LV6GK Gold 6GB(3x2GB) DDR3 PC3-12800 1600MHz CAS 8 1.65v

complete waste unless you have special 64bit software desgined to allow the memory use

4 gig is the max FSX will ever use even on a 64bit OS

Only certain networking software, CAD and AV software will have access to 8 and above and that assumes they are in fact 64bit programs

otherwise.. good list

be aware SLI in FSX is as useless as boobs on a bull. It will get you higher AA (16-32x) in higher resolution but nothing in performance

Hi Nick,

It may seem that for now 12GB is a total overkill, but three year ago when I bought 4GB with my current system everybody declared I was totally nuts to get this much memory and now 4GB is the standard, plus in a few years time with all this relatively cheap memory around who known what FS11 will need.

As for the two graphics cards, if you did read the total list of specs you must have seen that there are two 30" monitors in the list, so one card for each monitor and maybe the multi-monitor capable SLI Big Bang II drivers that nVidia will be releasing very soon will drive my two 30" monitors in SLI.

FS11 will not be 64bit and it will not be able to access more than 4-6GB

As I said.. its a waste

I can see 8 but I will bet 5000 bucks 12 wont do you any good in gaming within the time that system is outdated

If he ever gets into scenery design, it'll do him lotsa good, though, as I am constantly getting OOM errors when working with 500 MB photoreal backgrounds, with several of them open at once!

Only if the OS is 64bit... the graphics program is also 64bit and only if that program is marked in its exe file to use greater than 8GB

otherwise 8 is the limit

I don't mean graphics programs, I mean having photoshop open, ADE open, AFX open, SbuilderX open downloading another 200 tiles, and FSX on.

All of those should at least add up over 8 gigs  Grin

It wont matter

If the software being open is not 64bit and specifically designed to access over 8GB the system will still OOM or go to page file

No banks where robbed, I have a loving hardworking wife and I also have a very nice (good) job being a software architect.  Cool

I actually buy a complete new system every three years, unlike other people who prefer to keep upgrading there systems, but my philosophy is to buy an all out new system to keep all the hardware nicely balanced.  Wink

Hi Nick,

With regard to the big amount of memory, don't worry Nick I will be fully utilizing it every now and then when I use this machine for my work as software architect.

I have several virtual server disk images for Virtual Server 2005 and VMWare that I will be loading from the NAS running all kinds of software like SQL Server, IIS, Oracle and Biztalk the will run simultaneously on the system while I will connect to it with my laptop running Visual Studio 2005/2008 to do some software development but running FSX will be the main thing for this new computer.
