You would not believe how attached I get to my computer bundles of joy, updating them, bit by bit, over many years...
My latest? socket A motherboard purchase was the main reason for me to continue plugging in my trusty AMD, Socket A Athlon Thunderbird Processor, (I love the word "Thunderbird"!..), after using the equally trusty Pentium 486 DX60/100 Processors in the distant past*...

The funny thing is, my present old fashioned, PC bundle, seem to run every bit of software I have accumulated over the past
century
10+ years...(including my FS 2004)...

...my copy of FSX (purchased on release) is delayed for sometime in the distant future...and I'm in no particular hurry....

I remember building a gaming computer around something like that... I went all out and splurged for a WHOPPING 64MB of EDO RAM (
0.05 GB for reference
) and some sort of ridiculously expensive "Voodo" video card (I think its claim to fame was 16MB of dedicated memory
) ... it had a blazing fast 56K modem and a new-fangled sound card (both plugged in ISA slots).. and the REALLY cool thing was this monstrous, external CD burner (they were too big to be internal at that time).
If I remember correctly, I had nearly
$4,000
tied up in that computer .. and that was circa 1995 dollars.. A similar expenditure today would be more like $6,000..
Now look what we can get for 1/3 of that
Computers have never been cheaper

OK... according to my research.. that motherboard uses a Via KT133 chipset ?
If so, it probably won't see anything bigger than 127GB.. even with a new BIOS flash (which is probably riskier than it's worth)..
I still think partitioning is your best bet.. OR, just settle for the 120+ GB.. It's probably more than you'll use anyway..

But did any buddy think that could be a mistaken sticker in the HDD ? and instead to be 250Gb is actualy 160Gb , I've seen this in Western Digital and Maxtor (never In Samsung
Just a thought

Yeah Nick already said that.

Try to use fdisk before you format the HDD.Then format, after that probably it will not recognise the all drive but windows will.
It happend to me before, and thats what i have done, and i done it with a windows Millenium start up disk.
It worked with me.

KT133 southbridge does not support the larger HDD
it has nothing to do with using FDISK or anything else
As for 'need' and 'want' .. this is not the 80's or 90's where computers were a luxury. in this day and age not having a decent, at least 2 year old fairly modern model, is on the same order of not having a phone in the house and having to walk several miles to the general store to make a phone call

I'm afraid life is too short to get involved in never ending Sim V arguments, and never ending Sim V discussions, over various recommended Hardware bits and pieces, odds and sods...

Whatever I've got, mostly suits me fine for what I "need", day to day!
Whenever I need/feel like upgrading, I will perform the painless operation myself, as usual.

FSX runs fine... the problem

For me its not endless
I dont skimp on parts and play price games.. I buy the right tools for the job the first time and use them without issue and never ending upgrades
The system I posted at the top of this forum cost close to 4000 dollars in March of 2007. Today it can be had for about 2500 or less and will run FSX if properly clocked on max scenery sliders with the exception of high traffic slider settings in combination with heavy weather under major hub conditions
That tower still runs today, 24/7 although I use it for other purposes now
There have not been any upgrades in that tower since I purchased it and I expect it will continue to serve me well for several more years
I do buy hardware about once a year because I test and also like to play, and, I can afford it however in the computer MSFS game.. anyone who plays the price game will end up in a never ending upgrade circle that will end up costing them more over a 2 year period than simply biting the bulet and buying the parts outright
It also comes down to priority and what it is you wish to do. If you spend more time in a car or motorcycle for recreation.. put the money in that instead
I mean.. come on Paul.. you bought 250GB of hard drive and can only use 128GB of it becasue of the prehistoric chipset?
.. thats a waste of money and time figuring it out right there. You dont have to be on a 2500 dollar system to make sure when you buy upgrades like that HDD they work without issues and at the same time even a cheaper C2D PCIe system would run your MSFS much better than that KT133
but.. to each his own. I still have that Timex Sinclair and Apple IIc somewhere

hehe in the shop i work in if the customer wants to take it home to install it themselves (most dont) we just give them the drive in a static bag

LOL!
You guys are prattling on and on about Paul's KT133 chipset when he has an NFORCE 2 (ultra 400?) CHIPSET as he clearly stated in the first page of this thread.
Paul, you really need to go into BIOS and turn LBA on. (Large Block Addressing)
Other than that, read Nick's first post in this thread over again carefully. I was surprised at your post that followed Nick's first response, you seemed to just give up hope when a solution seemed imminent .....
