The United States abandoned a nuclear weapon beneath the ice in northern Greenland
following a crash in 1968, a BBC investigation has found.

Whoops. Americans are nearly as absent minded about nuclear weapons as Russians. Worrying isn't it? Makes you wonder what else has been going on that we've not yet heard about.....

We lost an H-bomb in the mud in a river in Georgia. I think it was Georgia. Anyway, we can't find it.

Cheesy

I just loved the way that the USAF lost one by leaving it strapped onto a B52. That was just mind boggling Shocked
I know the Russians and other ex-Soviet states have "misplaced" lots of them. Wouldn't surprise me if the British government lost a few as well!

Just what are you implying? Angry   I did not lose anything -- I only changed flights in Atlanta! We didn't even stray off the airport. Roll Eyes

Not absent-minded: our submarine couldn't retrieve it after it melted through the ice. It was then determined, "If we can't find it, no one else can." Another mental description comes to mind.

A fascinating read...

Its surprising how many technical problems occurred on all sides, during the 1950's - 1960's, in the Aeronautical Industry.....

..... culminating in the abandoned attempt to land Humans on the Moon in 1969, and the subsequent filmed reconstruction of the event in the Nevada Desert*.... Shocked...!

F..... Wink... Wink....!

Such accidents were not as uncommon as you may imagine. In the 1960s such things happened relatively frequently.

-16/4/1961: Tu-95 crashed 250 mi of Vladivostok. The aircraft was loaded with 4 7000lb nuclear bombs at the time of the crash.
3 of the 4 were discovered two weeks later. The forth was discovered 1 month later in a lake.

-8/12/1962: Tu-95 forced to drop 1 7000lb nuclear bomb 50 miles off Russian coast in the Sea of Okhotsk due to the failure of two of its engines and damage to the third engines prop. Bomb destroyed on impact. No explosion.

-19/2/1964: Tu-95 involved in a mid-air collision with a Sukhoi Su-9 over Bavhdar Lot, Kazakhstan. Rumoured that among wreckage were nuclear bombs.

The USSR were a lot less 'safety cautious' than most NATO nations when it came to nukes.

Info from a school book I forgot to return Grin

That's nothing we've done much worst. Wink

Get ready for this...

On March 11, 1958 the US Air Force accidentally dropped an atomic bomb...

...on a city...

...in our own country!

http://wkbwradio.com/site/bomb.htm

My uncle visited the site of the bombing not to long ago. The Air Force did a nice job of keeping it quiet.

To bad there wasn't a camera in the plane, the look on the flight crews faces probably would have been priceless...

"Oh, #@$%!" Grin

Well, they told us it was dropped on some Bluff on Mars... everyone thought it was a retaliation for that War of the Worlds episode.

The frightening thing is that when they landed in the Med there were 4 ships within a 5mi radius with a total combined crew and passanger count of 471.
