The Rampage Formula we just set up seems to have a sound card issue. Newegg won't just replace the sound card, they want the whole mobo back.

It occurred to me that somewhere down the road I'm going to upgrade to DDR3 and the Formula only supports DDR2.

*IF* newegg will go for it - do you see any problem in my upgrading to the Rampage Extreme now and using my current DDR2 memory in it?

I would assume that because of the X48 chipset I'd have no issues with XP, etc. and that clocking would be the same steps we went through.

Thanx,

Vic

You cant run DDR2 in a DDR3 mobo

If you did that you would need to purchase DDR3 1800 memory becasue you must run 450FSB to run the 9650 @ 4050 and as I recall the divider at 450 does not offer DDR3 1600 which would be the next step down.

DDR3 1800 2x2GB 8-8-8 max timing

Whats the problem with the sound card?

Mainly scratchy and popping on sound files that worked perfectly before. Updated drivers, played with sound acceleration. CHanged headset, mic & speakers.

Voice product like RogerWilco - high feedback squeal when I transmit, etc.

Other than that the mobo is super!!

hmmmmmm

As a quick test.. drop the system to 400MHz FSB and dont worry about the CPU speed or perf.. try your sound

for 2gb ram I'd buy one 2x2gb or 2? Any recommendations? Newegg has 8-8-8 but it's Crucial 2x1 and the OCZ 2x2 is 9-9-9.

If I have to go that way, I might as well get he DDR3 - again *IF* Newegg will agree to the swap +$$

Rgr - have to wait until I get home tonight then. Given the number of folks clocking this mobo, I'd expect to have heard some complaints.

Do yourself a favor and go 2x2GB and not OCZ. Corsair would be the way to go for that in 2x2GB. Their samsung chips are much more stable than OCZ micron chips

Patriot just came out with a 2x2GB 8-8-8 product but I do not know anything about it... they do however have a good rep

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820220336

If you do go 2x1GB then you need to lower the timing to 7-7-7

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820145187

and you cant plug 4 1GB stick in that board and run high speed. You must use the 2 black slots for high speed low latency so its either 2x1GB or 2x2GB

2GB 7-7-7
4GB 8-8-8

mushkin has a 2x2 product 1800 8-8-8-24 - I've always had good luck with them. Any negatives to your thoughts?>

let me check the chips..    your moving into DDR3 and high speed DDR3 is different than DDR2 with the x48 chipsets. Micron chips are not anywhere near as stable as Samsung in DDR3

hmmmm

Mush shows you must use GTL skew in their 1600 product running 1800

FSB Termination Voltage: 1.10016
CPU GTLVerf (0): +70mV
CPU GTLVerf (1): +70mV
CPU GTLVerf (2): +70mV
CPU GTLVerf (3): +70mV

http://forums.mushkin.com/phpbb2/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=12410#p49010

You can see their stable setup in that link

They do not show any repost on their 1800 product but I suspect its the same as the 1600, just overclocked on their sticks

They are showing 1T CMD is stable and thats a kick

I cant vouch for them but if you feel comfortable with Mush and given the support, its an option.

But do be aware that you are getting into higher DDR3 speeds now and as such the clocking on the memory gets a bit more complicated as shown in the GTL offset above. You may even need to tweak that with other products however Samsung chips have been shown to not need as much TLC in setup

I have the Creative XFi xtreme gamer sound card and it works perfectly.  You shouldn't have problems with a product you just bought but it could be just the card and not the board.  I don't think that asus card is as good as the XFi, you might try that.

Glad to see a fellow rampager!

I've always had great help from the guys at Mushkin so I do feel comfortable with them as long as the product works. Apparently from the thread it does.

If I were to go this way, down the road, would the Nellie fit into this mobo?

I guess the first thing is to see if Newegg will go with the program.

As Ahnold said - "I'll be back"!  Smiley

Thanx Nick, as usual you've given me things to think about.

Nope

Nellie is x58 and you cant use that mobo so that is why I think sticking with what you have may be better for now. The perf increase going to Nellie and DDR3 will be a heck of a jump over going DDR3 now and you already running 4GHz
