In your opinion, what is the most beautiful aircraft?
For me it would be a tie between the Su-47/Su-27/Mig-29 I just can't pick one over the others there!

I'll split my choices into catagories:
Jets:
Tupolev Tu-154M

Prop/Turboprops:
...tough choice, right now, I'll say the Vought Corsair, but that can easily change.

Hard for me -
HH-65 - beautiful nose! Streamlined
L-1049 Super Constellation (WINGTIP FUEL TANKS, RADAR NOSE) - sleek and streamlined with her wingtip fuel tanks and radar nose
Su-37 - oh, splinter camouflage, and I LOVE the ratio of wings to fuselage and also the placement of the wings
L-39 - beautiful nose
Sea Harrier FRS.1 - beautiful nose
A-10 - shark mouth! - Lizard
An-225 - perfect ratio of length to wingspan. Tailplane is also quite long.

It sucks that none fly into Brisbane.
I think a A340-200 does but it just doesn't compare.

The Spitfire, any Spitfire, wins hands down. That goes without saying. My second choice would have to be Concorde. The most graceful airliner ever built. So beautiful it took your breath away to see it.

Personaly, and this is aimed at all those yoghurt knitters who didnt want the 'SST' landing and taking off in the US at the time - i find this a disgrace - they didnt want it coming in and out of there airport when it was first put into service, but they are happy to receive one for there musuem. The anti concorde brigade did nothing for the success of this fantastic aircraft, even though it was proved to be less noisy then some other types at the time.
I suspect, had the Boeing SST come to fruition, there would have been no problem with it landing and taking off from Heathrow......
Anyway, i digress - my favorites in the beauty stakes include the VC-10, Concorde, the Vulcan, and the 747.

Well, whoever voted for the Russian planes I have to disagree. Those are the ugliest warbirds ever IMO. My vote goes for the P-51D. Nothing beats those lines then and now. Also a big fan of the F-5E/F...love that long swoopy nose. The F-22, F18, F-16 and of course the F-14 are all beautiful aircraft. As are the Gripen, Rafale and Typhoon (something so very sexy and cool about those canards).

That's why I like the Russian birds, all curvy and swoopy, and don't forget the canards on the more recent 'prettier' planes from our Russian companions.
American planes look like they were built to beat the air into submission, the (modern) Russian birds, and the latter EU planes you mentioned, all look as though they are intended to work with the air, and slip through without disturbing it. Very graceful.

You guys
have
seen an F-86, right? And what about the P-38?
And no gliders? Come on... ever seen a Bowlus BA-100?
It's a timeless discussion, and pretty silly to me- if it has wings, it makes my heart beat faster.
But there are quite a few airplanes designed between, say, 1930 and 1960 that I think are works of art. They all happen to "fly as good as they look", too.
A few more I haven't seen mentioned here:
DC-3
MiG-15
P-80
As for whirlybirds: gosh, they sure are ugly, but a well-kept H-500 or Dauphin can be lovely to look at.

Or a nice crosswind landing.
Used to see them in San Antonio back in the '80s a lot going right over my house on final. Then it was B-1's and then C-5's, and then I moved here where it's sometimes the odd jet at 20k or better.

Just reread the entire thread here, and it seems that no matter how many aircraft there are, there's a person out there to love each and every one.
Gotta be thankful for diversity.

The X-38 Grizzly. The more I fly it in FS, the more I love the shape of it. It combines some nice elements of several classic aircraft, while still retaining an original appearance.
And it looks gorgeous in WWII Navy blue.

Other than the Spitfire, the F-35A at first I though it was ugly, but it's growing on me. Also the new F-15SE looks sexy.

My favorite is the Team Rocket F-1. The one in the logo of the homepage is based at my airport.

All of you are so wrong it's laughable. The most beautiful airplane, and I have this on very good authority, is the F7F-3 Tigercat. Like a Porsche, there is no substitute. The 'Cat is gorgeous: twin radials, huge props, fuselage like a greyhound, guns in the nose, carries a few bombs-- what's not to love?
My system: AMD Phenom 9500 cpu, 2 x eVGA e-GeForce 8800GTS Superclocked vidcards (640Mb DDR3 each), Zalman "sunflower" 9700 fan, Gigabyte GA-M57SLI-S4 mobo, 4Gb G.Skill PC2-6400 DDR2 800Mhz RAM, 2 x Sony 20X DVD writers, Thermaltake Toughpower 850W modular p/s, 7 x 120mm fans, Windows XP Home and SP3, 2 x 250Gb Western Digital SATA-300 HDs (1 for apps, 1 for storage and precious files backup), CoolerMaster CM 690 case, NOD-32. Won't run FSX. Locks up a lot with FS9, too.

The F-86 is by far the greatest looking aircraft. Even when static on the airfield it looks like it's going 600mph because of its swept wings. Looks great both in bare aluminium and in camo.

My picks,
Airliner-->Airbus A340-300 (first time having seen one depart CYYC, just couldn't take my eyes away - an extremely graceful aircraft).
Military-->Tossup between SR-71, B-1B and the original F-15 series. The first two being long and slender and possessing lots of power, the latter just looks like a well-balanced design to me (as long as it works, looks are moot; however, it doesn't hurt to have the looks as well).

Not long after Gorbachev initiated 'glasnost', a Mig29 landed at Elmendorf enroute to somewhere in the south 48. Our approach control was on the base at the time so I saw it parked beside an F4. Much smaller but, with that special Russian blue paint job, a real stunner. For the big iron - how about the Connie 1649 Starliner. Poetry in motion, even on the ramp.

I have to agree with the Connie. No one can deny how sleek and beautiful that aircraft was for its day. Especially when its nearest competition was the DC-4, 6, etc.

I guess it all depends on your interpretation of the word "Beauty".
In my opinion of a beautiful aircraft I look at form and function before looks. I would have to pic Concorde.
Shes Fast, Sleek, Carried over 100 people at Mach 2. And she was a time traveler. She could leave London at 10AM and reach New york at 9AM
Plus she is the "Swan" of the skies.

For WWII aircraft it's a toss up for me. Either the F4-U or the ME-109
For modern military aircraft hands down the F-15E
For civi prop, I like the Beech Bonanza (V tail) or the Baron 58 for GA. But I just love the lines of the CV-580 and the L188 too.
For jet aircraft, hmmmm I like Learjets lines better than the Citation and I like the 727 and the similar L1011.
But I think for just pure sexyness I would definitely say the F-15E.
