I just finally let Microsoft install the SP 3 for my Win XP setup.  It caused a frame rate and smoothness improvement in fs2004 for me.  Have no idea why.... but it did.

best,

Interesting.

I am just going to stick with good old SP2 for now. I don't really think the SP update is really necessary for me.

Perhaps it was a SP3 DX update?

SP3 is just a collection of the updates that had already been avalable.

But I did not let Windows auto update do that.  I am never the "first kid on the block" with such stuff.  I wait and watch the experiences others are having.  Been burned too many times by "updates" or "new and improved".  Wink

When I finnally switch to FSX....... all the bugs will be out and lots of payware and freeware addons will be available.  Probably cheap...cause FSXI will be either out or right around the corner.   Grin

It doesn't mater if you let win update install sp3 or get it seperately from one scorce or another.

It is still just a collection of the updates released since sp2.

It does make reformatting easier. Just insall sp2, sp3 and be done with it. Smiley

From Microsoft:

"Windows® XP Service Pack 3 (SP3) includes all previously released updates for the operating system. This update also includes a small number of new functionalities, which do not significantly change customers’ experience with the operating system."

It's the last sentence that bugs me. "New functionalities" that "do not significantly change customers’ experience " could mean a lot of things. And if they don't improve the users' experience, or provide added security, then why include them? Roll Eyes

All I know is that, on my machine anyway, those "new functionalities" ( or something else in the download) made my IE6 start hanging, and pages that use Macromedia Flashplayer started acting funny too.

Yup, SP2 is fine for me, and while there were no MAJOR issues with SP3, I didn't see any vast improvements to validate it's download or install.

Just my two pennies worth.

Yeah, it does contain some minor new networking and security functions but, nothing that will increase performance in any DX app.

How can something be both new and improved?
If its new, its never been on the market before
if its improved, its just an alteration on an existing product
Huh Huh Huh Huh Huh
