I've used 6, 7 and 8 and I have to say for realism they're superb, however graphically they're miles behind FS.
I've not tried 9 yet but I think I will in the very near future somehow.... it looks like a huge improvement graphically Cool

Quick question, is it open world, or just certain areas?

Xplane has made leaps and bounds of improvement with XP9. the water is fully customizable(change wave height, water reflectivity, etc) you can have night vision(a green like over lay that makes things brighter), lights don't illuminate everything like in FS. when its dark in XP, its pitch black. the FDE of the planes is incredibly realistic Wink with the right set up XP can be FAA certified and can log time that counts to real world hours. Shocked forests are incredibly dense even on the lowest setting (denser than FSX on sparse but not by much) the runways are not just flat planes on the ground so as you look down the runway you can see the elevation changes.

if you want to see what its like there is a demo that you can fly around for like 15 minutes.

It's fantastic... but to be honest I don't like either.  Grin LOMAC:FC 1.12 & Falcon 4.0 FTW.  Wink

Version 9:  I just got this and it ROCKS!  Yeah!  Smiley

Scenery is actually very impressive above 3000 feet, more so than I expected.  Over 60 gigs on my seagate drive.  And flying is more realistic that's for sure.

Best part:  I can use ALL my horsepower to run this sim almost full tilt and STILL get 50-90 fps!  I guess that's what a well written program will do for multicore and big graphics cards.  Grin

I certainly won't give up FSX-I got two bitchin flight simulators now, and twice as many addons to buy!

-Jim

P.S.  I got this at Fry's for 40 bucks and worth every penny.

it's open world

also, just so you know, the aircraft actually follow the laws of physics in x-plane, where in fsx they just feel like they are stuck on a string, in x-plane when you throttle back in a 172, you actually have to use rudder and aileron to counter the angle change from the change in torque. furthermore, it models things such as micro bursts and that kind of stuff. finally, the code is constantly evolving, and they frequently release updates that are not just bug fixes, but also add new stuff too.

After a couple weeks of flying this, the flight dynamics are really exciting to experience.  Very high FPS with butter smooth operation.  The default scenery leaves a lot to be desired though.  The roads are lousy too.  And very few full VCs.  Notwithstanding that I'm still liking it.

Perfect world:  FSX graphics (including UTX/GEX/FEX/MTX) + Xplane flight dynamics and smoothness.
