Well, if there is a paint kit, you want that. You need a program to do the painting. Pay a visit to the repainting section, you will find good info. there.

Cool

What I said is basic stuff. I have never even done a paint. Stop by the paint section. Ask there, they will know for sure.

Cool

You can also paint over an existing texture, if I'm not mistaken.

It starts with a paintkit, (it can be done without, but then it will be (much) more work), that contains layered psd or psp files.
Then you need a graphics program like paint shop (psp) or photoshop (psd) (both payware) or gimp (freeware). You open the paintkit files in there, draw whatever you want your aircraft to look like, save the texture files in the right format (bmp for fs9, dds or bmp for fsx), if you want reflective paint, or bare metal, you'll have to edit the alphachannel as well.
Finally, you combine and convert all your work to files that FS recognizes with DXTbmp (freeware), you import them in FS and stand back in awe at your wonderful work (too be honest, you usually see that you made lots of mistakes ad try again..).
That's it in a nutshell, now for the little details....
My advice: start with an aircraft for which you can find a paintkit, and start with a simple livery, and continue from there..
good luck!

Grin Grin

How true this is. Sometimes i think 'how could i have screwed that bit up so much!'

But although im still a novice in the repainting lark, i can defo state a decent paintkit makes such a difference.

Going from a single .bmp that contained the whole aircraft to somthing like the Level D with so many layers its mind boggling  -  the Level D is the easiest to get great results reasonably quickly once youve figured it in your head whats what. the single bmp for the whole aircraft was a nightmare and took me several goes before it even resembled what i was painting.

I look at it as several layers of glass, each say 2ft apart. The first is the fuselage, the second is the rivets, the third is the panel lines and so on. Your painting over the top or under these layers of glass, and once your done, photoshop brings all the layers together.....and hey presto!

Also spend a lot of time researching what your painting. I get as many photos as possible before i start, and anything else with logos on, lettering, in fact as much as i can lay my hands on!
